The least SR model starts at just $26,400, which is a fantastic deal, and the best edition, the TRD Pro, is priced at $44,325 which, given the added features, is not terrible at all.
Tacoma’s powerful engine is a 3.5-liter V6 with around 278 horsepower. This is more than adequate for everyday use and basic off-roading, though it won’t be breaking any speed records anytime soon.
This engine is powerful and economical, which is possibly the most significant feature for an off-roader designed primarily for rough terrain navigation rather than track use.
Because it’s a pickup truck, Tacoma’s storage choices are mostly limited to the back. It can also be used to haul anything that won’t fit in the back, as well as trailers. The Tacoma can effortlessly pull up to 6800 pounds of whatever you choose to transport thanks to its powerful engine and available tow package.
It also has a payload capacity of roughly 1440 pounds for whatever you can fit in the rear.
TRD Pro Version
The TRD Pro is one of a few different Tacoma models, and it is the most expensive and likely the best. The Tacoma TRD Pro has a distinct look and unmatched performance. A 14-inch aluminum TRD Pro skid plate, a Toyota heritage grille, Rigid Industries LED fog lights, 16-inch TRD Pro black alloy wheels, 2.5-inch FOX Internal Bypass shocks, and Goodyear Wrangler All-Terrain tires are all included with the TRD Pro.
All of these off-roading features and helpful tools would be useless if Tacoma wasn’t capable of off-roading in the first place. Fortunately, Toyota chose Bilstein for Tacoma’s shocks. These shocks help provide consistently high performance in difficult settings by absorbing pressure and impacts in uneven terrain. This is due in part to the fact that they were designed primarily for off-road use.
A Multi-Terrain Monitor has been introduced to Tacoma to give drivers a clearer view of their surroundings. This is best used in more tough places with difficult terrain once again.
Drivers of the Tacoma can push a button on the included 8-inch touchscreen to display the front, rear, and side-mounted cameras, giving them an immediate picture of any potential obstructions in the surrounding area.
Hill Start Assist
Toyota has added a Hill Start Assist feature to the Tacoma to help drivers navigate steep inclines in hilly or mountainous terrain. This feature is critical for individuals negotiating very challenging terrain.
It works by reducing vehicle roll when the driver shifts their foot from the accelerator to the brake on steep inclines. The Tacoma could roll backward if this isn’t done, causing an accident.
The Multi-Terrain Select function, or MTS for short, keeps Tacoma’s off-roading credentials. This feature offers five settings to choose from, similar to the Crawl Control feature but with somewhat different functionality.
This function is more concerned with the vehicle’s throttle control and traction control, reducing wheel spin and assisting the driver in getting out of challenging circumstances without becoming stuck. It keeps the wheels from spinning too much and sinking the automobile into the ground.
Electronic Locking Rear Diff
Toyota has also equipped the Tacoma with an electrically locking rear differential for increased off-road performance. This feature is mostly used for handling rougher terrain with added stability.
The Tacoma’s rear diff can uniformly transfer engine power to both rear wheels in low-traction situations, which is a beneficial feature for people crossing sandy terrain and needing the extra grip.
The 2017 Tacoma’s Crawl Control function is one of the better features for off-roading. This is an innovative multi-terrain system that changes the throttle and brakes automatically for better off-road navigation.
It comes with five low-speed settings, allowing the driver to concentrate on steering. These options should be chosen based on the type of surface the vehicle is driving on, which can range from rock and gravel on a downhill level to snow and sand on an upward level, and everything in between.
