Inside and out, the Polestar 1 is a work of art. However, it performs even better than it appears. This is an automobile for the driver. The Polestar 1 is a hybrid electric sports car that doesn’t feel like one.
The Polestar 1’s powertrain is interesting, and it delivers power in a manner that no other electric or hybrid sports vehicle I’ve driven has. It feels like a true gas-powered grand tourer capable of keeping up with BMW, Mercedes, and Audi’s best.
The Polestar 1 looks like it has a V8 engine. That is, in fact, a positive thing. When you put your foot down, the automobile accelerates with the assurance that only internal combustion engines can provide.
The power delivery is organic and flowing, rather than computerized and on-or-off, as in electric vehicles. When you reach 45 mph, the torque appears to grow, simulating the soul of a well-balanced gasoline engine.
The Polestar 1 has a Corvette-like feel to it, rather than a Tesla Roadster. For the first time in my life, I have hope that the future of transportation will be both efficient and entertaining.
The Polestar 1 is a terrific vehicle with a lot of issues, but it does have one thing going for it: the hybrid drivetrain. It’s breathtaking, and it foreshadows a future in which automobiles might change their identities to better suit a driver’s preferences.
Competent Chassis and Potent Powertrain
Even with its flaws, the Polestar 1 is a remarkable spacecraft. It feels alive in a way that most hybrid and electric cars don’t. It’s well-balanced and well-controlled, with limitless possibilities.
The Polestar 1 is a touring motorcycle. It’s made to keep you comfy and in control of long car trips. Tourers, such as the Polestar 1, are one of my favorite car types. The majority of them are broad and sweeping.
In the best-case scenario, the driver feels like a cog in the vast machine, collaborating with the engines, motors, and gears to achieve a single purpose. This is frequently accomplished by combining a capable chassis with a powerful powerplant, which is the same formula utilized in the Polestar 1.
As the Polestar 1 accelerates off the line, the torque forces the riders into their seats. Torque increases as speed increases, similar to a small-block V8. The Polestar 1 settles into a rhythm at high speeds, appearing to be capable of maintaining any cruising speed. With balanced handling and strong turning, it carves its way through curves.
On broad highways, the hybrid powertrain comes to life. It’s not raucous or rowdy, yet it’s strong and understated. It’s not choppy at all, but rather sublime. It’s enthralling.
The Polestar 1 features numerous driving modes, just like other cars. The vehicle has a pure electric range of 60 miles, which is the longest of any gas-electric hybrid on the market. The Polestar 1 is silent and effortless in this mode.
The power is plentiful in hybrid mode, but not overflowing. The Polestar 1 morphs into its true personality as one of the best grand tourers available in Power mode.
Automobile aficionados frequently bemoan the arrival of electric vehicles. The pessimism is understandable.
Electric cars have a digital feel to them, yet for the most part, driving is an analog experience for most people. Electric engines are fascinating, but they don’t always give a sporty experience. Both are accomplished by the Polestar 1.
The Polestar 1 is stunning and stands out on the road. The hood is long and wide, with a solid and muscular back-end. The design is simple and easy to understand. From the broad front end to the sweeping taillights to the infotainment system, there are hints of Volvo’s influence throughout.
I wouldn’t choose a Polestar 1 over a fully-loaded Porsche 911 or BMW 8 Series, for example. However, Polestar will only produce 1,500 of this first model.
A Future Classic
Electric vehicles are the way of the future, but that is still a long way off. That’s fine for me. Gas engines, like the Polestar 1, have a role in a world that strives to be more energy efficient.
Rather than being revolutionary, automotive advancement is evolutionary, and the Polestar 1 is a huge step in the right direction. The software used to adjust the hybrid powertrain foreshadows a future that is as appealing as what is currently available from Europe’s top manufacturers.
The Polestar 1 is parked in an unusual location. Due to its high price, it is not a mass-market vehicle, and it is also not competitive against automobiles in its price range. That doesn’t change the fact that, regardless of its price, it’s a terrific vehicle.
It’s more intriguing as a technical marvel than as a practical product, and it’s cars like this that endure the test of time in the world of motoring. The Polestar 1 is destined to become a classic.
