Nissan Skyline GTR R34 That We Know

Nissan Skyline GTR R34 – The “Gran Turismo” on the Sony PlayStation gave the R34-generation Nissan Skyline GT-R all the advert it needed as the car was a hero car more desirable than anything wearing a prancing horse or raging bull on the hood. With its drifting performance on fast and furious, the car became the most sought after and the legacy has been well kept for this old lady.

Getting one of these beasts into the US was a heinous task as it was not officially sold in the US. Enthusiasts will go all out to lay hands on a car as practically capable of outstanding performance as the GTR-R34 hence the reasons a handful of it was found in the US both by legal means and some not so legal means.

Nissan Skyline GTR R34 – With a price such as $315,187 for a clean example of a 1999 Skyline GT-R V-Spec finished in delicious Midnight Purple II. In which Only 282 examples were painted this way for the 1999 model year. The odometer lists approximately 64,000 kilometers (just under 40,000 miles), with roughly 500 of those added by the current owner. The car has a clean title from the state. With all the limitations from “NHTSA’s Show or Display rules’’ attached to it, bidding for the car still took place. As the buyer was ready to apply for a new Show or Display permit from NHTSA.

The R34 GT-R remains an instantly recognizable car, irrespective of any styling alterations. Its blocky three-box silhouette setting it apart unmistakably from anything else on the road today, as it did in comparison to its swoopy Honda NSX, Toyota Supra and Mazda RX-7 rivals at the turn of the century.

The R34 GT-R V-Spec’s aerodynamics are dominated by a front spoiler and a carbon fiber rear diffuser. These Feature helps to regulate the airflow along the car’s underbody, thereby creating downforce which pulls the car down on the road. This leads to improved handling and stability especially at speeds in excess of 50 mph but also enhances stability during cornering and braking.

Aerodynamics on all GT-Rs are further improved by a new rear wing. The R33’s single-wing design has been dropped in favor of a dual-level type wing on the new version. The R34 Nissan Skyline GT-R’s rear wing now features a stiff main wing with a flap that can be adjusted in four angles.

The Interior

The R34 which is the fifth generation of the Skyline is largely an evolution of the similarly legendary R33. Key differences, aside from the obviously shorter overhangs and revised interior, include candy red engine covers, improved aerodynamics.

The R34 Nissan Skyline GT-R is actually one of the few top-performers that are quite useful in everyday driving. This four-seater sedan with a decent trunk has a simple but tastefully styled interior with Its controls at easy reach. Even up to speeds in excess of 75 mph the cabin stays remarkably quiet and, apart from the bucket seats, could easily be mistaken for that of a luxury coupe. Even passive safety is paid tribute to standard driver’s and passenger’s airbags, as well as optional side airbags.

Nissan Skyline GTR R34 – The car bucket-seats offer the driver perfect lateral support even during tight cornering. In addition, they are no less comfortable for long-distance rides, as well. The sporty touch is underlined by aluminum applications in the center console. For the boy-racers among us, the car comes with a 5.8-inch dashboard display, substituting for the gauges of previous GT-R versions and providing all necessary (and unnecessary) information about the car which can even be downloaded after the ride.

Performance of the GT-R R34
Like all R34 GT-Rs, the car comes with a 6-speed manual, all-wheel drive, all-wheel steering, and a twin-turbocharged 2.6-liter inline-6. The engine is officially rated at 276 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque, though it’s well known that this is an understated figure to meet a previous gentleman’s agreement between Japanese automakers to limit output to 276 hp in the interest of safety. The V-Spec grade adds a standard limited-slip differential at the rear, among other extras.

Nissan Skyline GTR R34 – For a car of this age and to get it back at its optimum performance a major servicing needs to be done which includes; replacing the timing belt, water pump, spark plugs, ignition coils, oxygen sensor, and valve covers, plus cleaning the fuel injectors and adding fresh oil and coolant.

So unfortunate that the R34 Skyline won’t be eligible in the US until 2024 due to the 25-year rule for easy import of classic cars into the country. That notwithstanding as the R32 and R33 with which their GT-R versions have a similar mechanical setup to the R34 GT-R are allowed to be shipped into the country.
