This Is Why We Love The Nissan Silvia S14

The Nissan Silvia S14 is a rear-wheel-drive series of sport coupes built on the Nissan S platform. Produced between 1994 and 1999 the S14 also got branded as the 200SX and 250SX in some regions. The S14 styling was different from its S13 predecessor in terms of length and width. This was a perfect car for drifting as it had a lower ground clearance compared to the S13. It looked more aggressive and the new styling was well received. 1996 saw some minor trim revisions and all-new headlamps and rear lights. The car’s new rounded styling contributed to the illusion of a greater increase in size than actually occurred. To improve handling, the wheelbase and track were both increased.

The car competed favorably against other sport-coupe cars in its eras such as the Honda Prelude, Mazda MX6, and Ford Probe. The US market received a 2.4-liter four-cylinder (KA24DE) with little performance potential, while the rest of the world saw the SR20DE and SR20DET (T for turbocharged) with plenty of performance. The car came with a standard 5-speed manual and a 4-speed automatic was available. Do you care to know more about the S14? Seatback as we take you through its features.

For the chassis details responsible for road holding, handling behavior, and ride comfort, the 200 SX S14 has Independent McPherson coil springs. Anti roll-bar front suspension and Multilink. Coil springs. Anti-roll-bar rear suspension. Fascias and other exterior trim pieces were revised in the S14.

The Engine and performance
Nissan Silvia S14 – The 200 SX S14 2.0 Turbo featured a turbocharged Inline 4 cylinder engine, accompanied by a 5 speed Manual gearbox. The engine code designation was SR20DET and was able to produce a maximum power of 200 PS (197 bhp – 147 kW) at 6400 rpm and torque of 265 Nm (195 lb. ft) at 4800 rpm.

This rear-wheel-drive (RWD), had a fuel consumption rate of 8.8 liters/100km – 32 mpg-UK – 27 mpg-US (Average), accelerating from 0-100 km/h (62mph) in 7.5 seconds with a top speed of 146 mph (235 km/h), the car’s curb weight was of 2734 lbs (1240 kg).

Both the S13 and the S14 built for the US came with the KA24DE engine. Every other S13 and S14 outside the US models come either as CA18DET or an SR20DET accompanied by a turbocharger.

Comparing their styling is a difficult task as we all see them differently so also our preference for them. The S13 came in as a coupe and a hatchback. In some places overseas the S13 coupe was called the “Silvia” and came with an entirely different front clip. The flip-up headlights were replaced with long, horizontal, stationary headlights. The taillights were also replaced with better-looking ones

The S14, however, only came in as a coupe. Once again, in some places overseas the S14 came with a different front end, and different tail lights. The overseas models had much sharper and more angular headlights, the taillights were also changed.

The S13 features a lighter chassis than the S14 although it’s much weaker, making the suspension tuning very difficult. The suspension geometry of the S13 is also much poorer than the geometry of the S14, making proper tuning even more difficult.

However, the S13 chassis is already set up for an R33 cross member, making an RB swap very easy. It can be done on the S14 chassis, but it will require fabrication.

Overall, the S14 chassis is much stiffer and better with its suspension geometry, making it very easy to learn how to drift on. But, the S13 is much lighter and smaller, so if you stiffen up the chassis it can actually be better than the S14 thanks to its weight advantage.
