De Tomaso P72 And The Task Ahead

The De Tomaso is an Italian automobile manufacturer. The brand was acquired by Hong Kong-based IdealVentures in 2014. The company introduced De Tomaso P72, a new sports car at the 2019 Goodwood Festival of Speed. The new P72 uses a carbon fiber monocoque chassis constructed to LMP1 standards and is based on the Apollo Intensa Emozione. Unlike the Intensa Emozione, the car is meant to be a grand tourer

To ensure the exclusivity of the car, Only 72 units of the P72 are planned to be produced and they will be powered by a V-8 with a manual gearbox and will be available in right and left-hand-drive specifications, the former is a special request from Choi for Hong Kong homologation. All 72 examples of the €750,000 ($822,000 as of this writing) supercar have already been spoken for. The price point puts it in an interesting mid-point between more mainstream supercars such as the Ferrari SF90 Stradale and Lamborghini Aventador SVJ and hypercars such as the McLaren Speedtail, Bugatti Chiron, and Koenigsegg Regera.

As we would have expected, half of the P72’s production run is expected to go to North America and be distributed via Miller Motor Cars. De Tomaso has secured three other distributors for the P72: Joe Macari for the United Kingdom and the Middle East, Louwmen Exclusive in Europe, and SPS Automotive in Hong Kong/Asia. The car will go under homologation but De Tomaso has assured that the car will remain the same as the pre-production model shown at Goodwood. Let take a brief look at some of the P72 features.

The Sculpted Exterior Design

The exterior of the car was designed by Jowyn Wong of Wyn Design, taking inspiration from 1960s LeMans racers as well as with the P70 racing car. This, the company did with a twist of modernity to the classic shape adorning it with a top-mounted exhaust system.

The Classic Interior Design
The Reborn De Tomaso Automobili wanted to bring romanticism back to supercars to honor the 60th anniversary of the brand. Its interior comes with jaw-dropping features a combination of old-school and modern touches. The interior is upholstered in diamond-stitched leather and has opulent instrumentation featuring polished copper elements along with an open linkage gearshift lever finished in copper of the manual transmission installed in the car. The interior also has a circular analog and digital instrumentation design to recall the car interiors of the 1960s and 1970s.

The P72 Engine

De Tomaso revealed that the P72 will be powered by a 5.0 liter supercharged Ford Coyote V8 engine featuring a root-type supercharger manufactured by American tuning company Roush. The engine is a result of a technical collaboration between both companies. The engine is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. Power output figures were not disclosed as the engine is still in the development stage.

An applauding aspect of De Tomaso’s line of products is that diamond paint finishes, Nürburgring lap times, or top-speed records are for now not much concern to the brand. With the turn of events, we can boldly say that De Tomaso’s story might be an interesting one to keep following.
