Social networking sites have opened up a new world of dating opportunities for singles looking to find love. Dating apps have become incredibly popular, with millions of users signing up every day.
However, are dating apps the way forward, or are they just another fad? Whether you’re looking for a quick hookup or a long-term relationship, there’s no shortage of dating apps to choose from.
From Tinder and Bumble to newer services like Hinge and The League, there’s something for everyone. In this blog post we take a look at the most popular dating apps available today and ask whether Facebook Dating is worth the hype?
Tinder
One of the most popular dating apps is Tinder. It’s an easy way to meet someone new and get into conversations with people near you. If you want to know more about them, all you need to do is swipe right and find out if they also want to know more about you. This app has a huge user base of over 50 million users on every continent bar Antarctica.
Acquired by Match Group in September 2015, it’s seen as one of the original dating apps and many believe it invented the swiping function that we see on many other apps today. Tinder allows users to register simply by linking their Facebook profile which means that there are no email addresses or phone numbers required for registration.
You can then search for potential matches based on gender, age, location and mutual interests. If there’s a match found between two people, then both users will be notified via chat – giving this app a focus on online communication rather than face-to-face contact like some other services have.
Bumble
One of the most popular dating apps out there is Bumble, which is a dating app for women to make the first move. Bumble thinks that giving women control over the conversation will create faster and more meaningful connections.
It’s also created with an aim to promote inclusivity and equality in online dating. Tinder has been one of the most popular dating apps worldwide since it was launched in 2012. Tinder offers a more traditional approach to online dating by showing you potential matches on your phone and you swipe right if you like them or left if you don’t.
Tinder has been heavily criticized for putting too much power into the user’s hand, with many people using it for random hookups or sending inappropriate messages to strangers. Match.com is a site that has been around since 1995, setting up dates between singles from their database of 29 million members globally (that’s 2 million more than its nearest competitor).
Match focuses on finding long-term relationships rather than quick flings and guarantees that they won’t use any personal information they gather from their users’ profiles without permission.
Hinge is a free app that matches singles based on their Facebook friend networks instead of asking users to fill out multiple forms about themselves like other apps do. Hinge found success by focusing on “real world” connections rather than purely digital ones, as it takes someone’s social media page into account when suggesting potential matches to users. However, this can be seen as not as successful
Coffee Meets Bagel
Coffee Meets Bagel is one of the more popular dating apps available today. This app is designed for those looking for meaningful relationships with a friend-first mentality. When you sign up, you are given a daily curated list of up to 21 potential matches – with whom you can either chat or like as a friend. You can also control how long your profile is active for and set up your preferences.
The interface is simple and user-friendly, which means that there’s no fussing around trying to find someone new. Simply log in, scroll through the feed of potential matches and ‘like’ who interests you most.
You’ll only see the profiles of people that have liked you back too – so it’s easy to avoid any unwanted attention. If you’re looking for something a little less casual than Tinder and more low-key than OkCupid, Coffee Meets Bagel might be right for you!
Hinge
A Social Dating App Hinge is a social dating app where you can find your friends of friends matches. Hinge uses your Facebook data to show you people with similar interests and aims to make the app more personal than other dating apps.
The League
The most exclusive dating app The League is an exclusive dating app that screens potential singles on the basis of education, career and salary. Only those who make over $150,000 can apply to join the site and their membership numbers are capped at 10,000. In addition to providing a more challenging pool of singles for you to choose from.
The League’s members are also more educated with close to 50% holding a graduate degree or higher. If high-quality singles are what you’re looking for then this is the place to start.
Users of The League have been found to date less often than other daters but they are much more likely to find their ‘soulmate’ when they do date. While apps like Tinder are designed to facilitate casual hookups, there’s no doubt that The League is catering for a different type of audience.
Match.com
Match.com is the largest dating site in the world, with over 20 million members. It’s also one of the oldest dating sites around, having been started in 1993 as a “computer-dating service”.
When it launched, it was so successful that it became profitable within two months. Match offers you various features based on how much you pay for membership.
For example, if you subscribe to Match Gold, the most expensive package, you can browse profiles anonymously (you don’t have to provide your name or email address), upload up to six photos and search by age range and location among other things.
Match has more than 20 million active users and a near-perfect 5-star rating on Google Play Store and iTunes App Store. The app has won awards including being voted Best Dating App at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) Innovation Awards 2012 and Best App at the MEF International Mobile Awards 2016.
This is an excellent option for singles looking to find long-term relationships or marriage partners because of its commitment to finding people who are serious about dating as opposed to those just looking for sex.
OkCupid
OkCupid is one of the most popular dating apps on the market. The app has been around since 2004 and is a free online dating service that uses questionnaires to match people with potential partners by personality type.
What Is Facebook Dating?
Facebook Dating is a new feature that will be available for Facebook users aged 18 and over. It’s an optional service that provides a way for you to explore your potential matches on Facebook before meeting them in person.
Generally, if you want to use Facebook Dating, you have to link it to your current dating app profile, such as Tinder or Bumble. You can then notify people who are friends with you on Facebook that you’re using the service by selecting one of these options: “interested in dating,” “looking for friendship,” or “just looking.”
The idea is that Facebook Dating gives you the opportunity to get know someone before deciding whether or not they should become your romantic partner. The world-renowned social media site has taken a giant step into the realm of digital dating and has been met with mixed reviews from users.
How Does Facebook Dating Work?
Facebook Dating is a new service released this summer which allows Facebook users to find potential love interests. It’s currently only available in the United States, India, Canada and New Zealand, but it’s expected to be rolled out worldwide soon. The app is a standalone dating app, separate from the main Facebook app.
You can only access this on your mobile device (there’s no desktop version yet), so you must make sure that your phone is always charged and switched on if you want to use it.
There are three ways to find people using Facebook Dating:
– Find friends of friends: This method is great for finding people you probably have something in common with. Start by selecting “Find Friends of Friends” on the home screen of the app. Next, choose between “Men Near Me,” “Women Near Me” or “Friends of Friends Near You.” Then select an age range from 18-24 upwards and enter your distance radius from 1mi up to 50 miles. You can also filter by relationship status (single or taken).
– Search for someone: If you know who you want to find then search for them here too. Type in their name and then select whether the person is male or female, as well as their age range (18-24 upwards). You can also specify their height, ethnicity and relationship status before continuing with the search process.
– Spy on mutual
Is Facebook Dating Worth The Hype?
Facebook has been looking to branch out and make its way into the dating industry for a while now. It’s no surprise, when you consider that they have unparalleled access to people’s personal data.
But are Facebook Dating profiles worth the hype? Facebook Dating will essentially let users sign up with their Facebook profile and then find other singles who are interested in them.
They can browse through potential matches based on shared interests or mutual friends. Users will be able to see mutual friends, job titles, education history, and even how many mutual friends they share with their potential matches.
But is it worth the hype? Well, in theory it sounds great; Facebook has an enormous amount of personal information about us so it would be easy for us to find someone who shares similar interests or is at least compatible with us.
Unfortunately, there are some major flaws in this plan.
First of all, most people don’t want to share all their personal information online, especially if they want a chance at finding love offline too – finding someone who shares similar interests or is at least compatible with you is just not enough!
Secondly, there are some problems with this idea because your app won’t just be limited to your feed – anyone who can see your profile can contact you directly and there’s absolutely no way of telling if they’re a genuine match or not.
And finally, dating apps have never really managed to catch on – in fact there’s pretty much only one.
