How to Send Text Messages From Your Chromebook

There are a few different ways you can use the Chrome OS to sync your Android phone and Chromebook. One advantage is that it enables you to use your Chromebook to view your SMS inbox and reply to texts. We’ll walk you through how to set it up and send texts from your Chromebook.

Using Your Chromebook to Send Text Messages

You must first pair your Android smartphone with your Chromebook before you can use the text message capability. You must be running Chrome OS 71 on your computer and Android 5.1 or higher on your Android device in order to be able to do this. Additionally, you must confirm that the same Google account is signed onto both devices.

How to Configure Your Chromebook for Text Message Sending Features

• When your Chromebook is open, click on the “Status” tab at the bottom of the right side of the screen. The “Settings” menu will then appear when you select the “Gear” icon.
• Look for the “Android Phone” option under “Connected Devices” in the Settings menu.
• The “Set Up” button next to it is then clicked.
• Selecting your Android phone from the “Select A Device” dropdown menu will bring up a pop-up window, which you may then dismiss by tapping the blue “Accept & Continue” button.
• Following that, you authenticate yourself by entering your Google password. If everything is in order, a pop-up message with the words “All Set” will appear on your screen. Click “Done” to shut the window after it has appeared.
• When you return to the “Settings” menu on your Chromebook, you will find the “Verify” option next to “Android phone.”
• Try pressing the button to unlock your phone. You will receive a notification indicating the devices have been successfully paired on your Android phone and Chromebook.

How to Send a Text from a Chromebook

You must first download Google’s Android Messages app from the Play Store in order to send text messages from your Chromebook. You don’t need to download it again if you use a Google Pixel, Nokia, or Motorola cellphone because Android Messages is already installed on those models. Once you’ve downloaded, proceed as follows:

• Click the three-dot menu symbol that you can see on the top, right side of your device, to open the Android Messages app. You select “Message For Web” from the menu by tapping on that option.
• Following that, you select the “QR Code Scanner” tab and target the camera of your smartphone at the QR code on your Chromebook.
• The Chromebook window will then show your text message inbox.
• Next, you create new SMS texts, add files, and do other things. A “Messages” shortcut will be added by the Chrome OS to your device’s app library.
• Once you are through writing the text message, you can send it by clicking the send button.
• You will receive a notification anytime a new text message arrives on your phone, even if your text messages are not open on your Chromebook. Additionally, you should be aware that text messaging only functions when your Android handset and Chromebook are both online.
