Why Arsenal Was Not Drawn in the 2022/2023 Europa League Knock Out Stage

Arsenal is Still in the 2022/2023 Europa League Knock Out Stage

Arsenal won Group A, but despite earning a spot in the knockout rounds, they won’t be selected for the Europa League draw, which only includes the eight teams that placed second in the group round.

The eight third-placed clubs from the Champions League group stage will also be drawn, making a total of 16 teams in the draw, including those eight teams.

The knockout round play-offs, which determine which eight teams will join the eight group stage champions in the last 16 draw, will feature these 16 teams as competitors.

The New Europa League Knock Out Stage Rule

Last season, the knockout round play-offs were implemented to choose the final eight teams for the Europa League’s round of 16.

Another approach to raise the level of competition in the Europa League is to match up one of the eight clubs who placed second in the group stage of the Champions League against one of the eight teams that finished third in their respective groups.

The losing teams will be eliminated from all European play.

When Will Arsenal Resume the Competition?

Arsenal won’t learn their opponents until the end of the knockout round play-offs next year, having already moved directly to the last 16.

In the knockout round play-offs, which are scheduled for February 2023, one of the eight teams who advance from this stage and into the last 16 will face Arsenal.

On Friday, February 24, 2023, the draw for the round of 16 will take place at the UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland.
