S2 Del Mar Electric Bike Coming Soon

Once launch by the second quarter of 2022 according to Jochen Zeit, chief executive officer of both Harley-Davidson and LiveWire, Del Mar S2 will be the first electric bike to use LiveWire’s scalable, modular ARROW platform which was developed entirely in-house by the team at LiveWire. Incorporating the battery pack, electronics, and motor as the primary chassis element, optimizing performance efficiency, weight, and cost to the lineup.

The S2 Del Mar battery pack contains 21700 cylindrical cells. Practically, the battery is a new lithium-ion cell size format that has attracted companies such as Tesla, Samsung, and LG due to its increased energy density over the more common 18650 format. Its improved safety and reliability are undoubted hence the multinationals that have identified with it.

The LiveWire ARROW architecture gives rise to a middleweight motorcycle as it incorporates the DC-DC converter, inverter, and onboard charger, sharing components such as the cooling circuit and wiring harnesses to reduce the size, weight as well as to reduce the number of microprocessors required.

The coalesce of Harley-Davidson, LiveWire, and special purpose acquisition company AEA-Bridges Impact Corp. (ABIC) and partnering with Taiwanese manufacturer Kymco, is a welcome development to the industry as we are about to see some of the masterpieces that will redefine biking.

The Del Mar is described as a “powerful, nimble electric motorcycle and the foundation for future variants. The motorcycle will use the S2 Del Mar ARROW platform tuned for middleweight-level performance. Regarding the California horse track successful hosting of the flat track events over the years, there is an assumption that the new LiveWire S2 Del Mar will resemble the flat track-inspired concept

Technology
We have been made to know that the Del Mar will be capable of receiving Firmware over the Air (FOTA) updates to refine the vehicle’s systems, calibrations, and algorithms remotely without needing to bring the bike into a dealership. FOTA updates can also enable new features and functionality, though it’s unclear if LiveWire will follow in the footsteps of Zero and its Cypher III+ platform in charging for new features and upgrades.

Harley-Davidson says it will have an investor presentation for both H-D and LiveWire in May, which will presumably take place after the LiveWire-ABIC merger is complete. We may receive more news on the LiveWire Del Mar at around the same time.

Aside from the S2, there will also be S3 and S4 categories. The S3 and S4 categories will be small models of electric motorcycles that are slower, and therefore even more affordable. According to the explanations of Jochen Zeit, the S3 range will be developed in partnership with the Taiwanese manufacturer Kymco.
