Ferrari Joins The League Of SUV With It All-New Purosangue

The all-new Purosangue SUV will be Ferrari’s first-ever off-roader designed to rival luxury models such as the Aston Martin DBX, the Lamborghini Urus, and the Bentley Bentayga.

Purosangue has been described by in-house members of the brand as a “Ferrari Utility Vehicle.” The car is designed to have a relatively low ride height and a low-slung silhouette. It will also feature an extended bonnet, a steeply raked windscreen, and a fairly long wheelbase.

Ferrari has made the rear overhang substantial, while the rear wheels appear to be a little larger in diameter than the fronts – just like a supercar. Quad-exit exhausts are also visible on the prototype, as are a set of enormous cross-drilled brake discs and huge calipers. However, that could just be a quirk of the way the prototype has been set up. Since the Purosangue rides so low, we expect Ferrari will fit it with ride height-adjustable air suspension.

The new Purosangue SUV will be the most spacious model in Ferrari’s line-up. There are speculations that there will be a four-door, four-seat layout, and a hatchback tailgate. This will make it an indirect replacement for the GTC4 Lusso four-seat coupe, which Ferrari pulled from its price list at the end of 2020.

All-New Purosangue – This crossover is designed to feature thin headlights with daytime running lights cutting through similarly to those on the Ferrari Roma beside a tall trapezoidal grille. Its roofline will likely be sleeker than the comparatively boxy Bentley Bentayga but without any angular edges like those on a Lamborghini Urus.

The rear of the car gets a large black panel with the prancing horse logo taking center stage. The thin LED rear lights look similar to those on the Ferrari 296 GTB and aren’t a million miles away from the full-width lightbar on a Porsche Cayenne Coupe.

The new car’s cabin could take inspiration from Roma’s interior. We expect the Purosangue to be crammed with leather, brushed metal, and carbon fiber, as well as a new version of Ferrari’s infotainment system.

The new Ferrari Purosangue is expected to be the first modern Ferrari to come with five seats, although it’s likely you’ll be able to get a set of two individual rear seats if you’d prefer like those on the GTC4 Lusso.

The Engine Composition
Purosangue will be based on the same platform as the Roma GT as this was confirmed by Ferrari. Former Chief Technology Officer Michael Leiters told said “In general, we will have two families of architecture – front and rear-engine families.

“The modularity is there and, especially on the front-engined architecture, we have to foresee many more models. We have a 2+2, we have a 4+, we are thinking about Purosangue, and so on.”

Leiters also stressed that the SUV’s platform is capable of accepting either V6, V8, or V12 engines, which suggests the Purosangue could be available with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, similar in design to the unit found in the SF-90 Stradale.

However, we expect the V6 and V8 to likely be candidates for electrical assistance. Ferrari will continue to develop its 6.5-liter V12 engine independently of hybrid drive, as combining such a heavy combustion engine with an even heavier electric motor and battery pack will make the car overweight which is not favored by the company’s engineers.

Ferrari’s Chief Marketing Officer, Enrico Galliera, told Auto Express: “To be honest, electrifying a V12 means creating very probably a heavy and big car. So electrification ideally should be coupled with smaller engines.

“The philosophy is to try to be ready with different technologies to use them with the necessary evolution,” he added. “That’s why we have a wide range of engines: V12, V8, and in the future, the V6.”

There are spy videos of Purosangue mules circulating on social media, some of which feature a very distinct 12-cylinder engine. However, as the Purosangue will share its underpinnings with the Roma GT, we expect it’ll also be available with that car’s turbocharged 3.9-liter V8 engine.

In this GT car, the unit produces 612bhp and 760Nm of torque, which is likely to be a constant across the two models. Given the amount of extra space available in the Purosangue’s body, though, Ferrari could shift away from Roma’s rear-drive layout and move instead to a four-wheel-drive set-up.
