Apple iPhone SE (2020) – Specifications
Apple has officially unveiled the new iPhone SE, a lower-cost iPhone with a starting price of $399 for a 64GB model. It features the same basic design and appearance as the iPhone 8, with a 4.7-inch display, wide top and bottom bezels, and a home button with Touch ID. It’s a design that hasn’t changed much since the iPhone 6, making the iPhone SE the fifth version of the same look. This is a design that Apple is very familiar with.
It goes on sale on Friday, April 17th, and will be delivered on April 24th. A 128GB variant will cost $449, and a 256GB model will cost $549. It will come with a complimentary year of Apple TV Plus, much like previous iPhones. It will come in black, white, and Product Red.
The iPhone SE is a cheaper version of the iPhone 8, featuring a superior camera and processor. Despite its age, this iPhone SE is equipped with Apple’s A13 Bionic technology, which is also included in the iPhone 11 and 11 Pro models.
That could give it a far longer life than the $449 iPhone 8 model it replaces in Apple’s range, which had an A11 chip from 2017. The second-generation iPhone SE will not have a plus-sized version, but the iPhone 8 Plus will continue to be marketed in some areas.
The chip also enables some new photography functions on the new iPhone SE. On the back, there’s a single 12-megapixel camera lens (along with a flash). Apple claims that the A13 Bionic chips would help it improve its Smart HDR photography, which combines numerous pictures into a single image to boost lighting and detail.
It also has a portrait mode with Apple’s “monocular depth sensing” technology. It detects depth and faces using machine learning, which implies that it will only operate on people, not dogs. It has optical image stabilization, and Apple claims that it can handle “cinematic” video stabilization as well as support 4K video at 60 frames per second. The front-facing selfie camera is 7-megapixels, and it can also do portrait mode effects.
Many of the new second-generation iPhone SE components are the same as those found in the iPhone 8. The battery life should be similar to that of the iPhone 8. (but no word on exact battery size). Apple claims that cases made for the iPhone 8 will fit the iPhone SE perfectly. Apple’s 4.7-inch IPS LCD Retina display with True Tone color is included. It appears that the display is identical to that of the iPhone 8.
That isn’t a problem in terms of quality. This IPS display is well-known and well-respected, but it means that anyone hoping for a smaller phone may be disappointed. Apple says that this is the most popular screen size it has ever sold — 500 million devices and counting — and that’s part of the reason it’s using this screen size now.
