Stop the targeted advertising from Facebook from stalking you across the Internet

In order to show you targeted advertising both on and off Facebook, Facebook now uses your Facebook ad preferences—your information, interests, and browsing history.

And Facebook is also monitoring you (through your browser) and using that information to serve targeted advertising across the web for those of you patting yourself on the back to stay off Facebook, not so fast.

Last week, Facebook detailed its latest advertisement plan in a blog post titled Giving People Better Advertisements, which includes expanding its Facebook Audience Network beyond just Facebook users. Ads for the Facebook Audience Network can now be shown to everyone including individuals who do not have a Facebook account.

Since Facebook is unable to track non-Facebook users via Facebook, they can use their browser to track them. This is currently a standard technique adopted by most major advertising agencies, as surprising as this might sound (including Google).

That’s understandable if you’re not too keen on Facebook using your data to serve ads on any website you visit. And with a fast Facebook settings tweak, you can now opt-out of this.

A significant note: This will not preclude Facebook from collecting information about you, nor will it stop you from seeing advertising altogether. Facebook is also going to collect intel, it is just not going to use said intel to show you ads. You’ll still see advertising, but they may not be important to your interests (or, what Facebook thinks your interests are).

Click this link to go directly to the settings page for Facebook Ads (you may need to sign in to Facebook). Open Facebook manually to get there, click the down arrow in the upper right-hand corner and go to Settings, and then click the Advertising tab in the left-hand menu.

Click Edit next to Advertisements on apps and websites outside of Facebook, and change your choice to No.

While you are here, we suggest opting out of the other “features.” of Facebook ad-tracking. Turning off the Advertising setting based on my usage of websites and applications would prevent Facebook from serving you interest-based advertisements on Facebook while turning off Ads with my social activities will prevent others from having advertisements paired with your social actions (liking, commenting, or sharing).

By clicking this page, you can also see what tastes and interests Facebook thinks you have. Hover over it and press the X button that appears on the right side to delete the interest.

If you’re not a Facebook user, by opting out of the Digital Advertising Alliance, you can avoid Facebook and other advertising companies (including Google, Amazon, AOL, and Yahoo) from displaying advertisements based on your browsing history. Click this link to do this, scroll to the bottom of the page, and click Select All Businesses. For each browser you use, you will need to do this.
