On Wednesday, May 13, for iOS and Android users in the United States, Facebook unveiled Avatars, its own take on Bitmoji.
In June 2019, the firm previously rolled out Avatars in Australia, and in April 2020 in Europe. The latest release extends to U.S. users the innovative functionality, and it is easy to get in on the fun.
To get started, you’ll first need to head to your mobile device’s Avatar creator, which you can find when you tap the smiley face on Facebook‘s comment composer. On the Facebook app menu, you can also access the builder from Bookmarks.
Tap the three horizontal lines at the bottom right of your screen to get there, and then scroll down to “See More” and then “Avatars.”
Eventually, by simply clicking on any Avatar you’ve seen your friends post, you can make an Avatar. You’ll only be able to access the Facebook Messenger builder if you use an Android device, but the functionality will soon be rolled out for iOS users, according to the company.
To build your Avatar, it only takes a few simple steps and you will be able to customize several characteristics, such as skin tone, style and color, eye shape, nose shape, glasses, hairstyles, and more. You should start using it on Facebook once you have your Avatar customized to your taste. In your comments, stream, profile picture, messenger, and stories, you can share your doppelgänger.
You’ll need to tap the smiley face icon in the comment section to use Avatar in a comment. You’ll be able to see all the choices for your Avatar stickers from there, which are like a combination of your Avatar and emojis. So, where your Avatar has heart-eyes or keeps a “Congrats” symbol, you might share a sticker.
You’ll need to go to your Avatar using some of the same methods you can use to build one to share it on your feed or profile image (e.g. the comment composer, from the Bookmarks in your Facebook Menu, or from another Avatar sticker).
When you have returned to your Avatar, press the arrow icon in the upper-right corner. You’ll also see the choice at the bottom, “Share it as a profile picture,” or “Share it on feed.” When you choose “Share it on feed,” before deciding to share your story, status, or profile picture, you’ll be able to pick from three poses for your Avatar.
When using Messenger, you can include your Avatar as well. Choose the smiley face icon next to where you type your message in the Comment Composer, and the option “use Avatars as stickers” will appear. From there, in any of your messenger conversations, you can send in your Avatar.
