A Lookback At The BMW E46 M3

The BMW E46 M3 is a 3 Series-based racer. The car was revealed at the Frankfurt motor show. The car saw a complete overhaul of the E30 featuring a wider stance front and wider wheel arches at the back. The 3.2-liter straight-six engine from the E36 was part of the success story of the E46 M3 with an increase in power to 343bhp and a new rear differential to improve handling.

The E46 is a redefined fast road car with a top speed restricted to 155mph and attaining 60mph in less than five seconds. The car’s performance is as welcoming as it looks. The E46 M3 is a day-to-day masterpiece. From a visual perspective, it comes with wide arches, gills inspired by the iconic 1970s CSL, quad exhaust pipes, and a distinctive power bulge rippling out of the aluminum bonnet.

The car’s cabin came with a lowdown driving position. The seats are very comfortable, equipped with bulging lumbar pads to keep your shoulders in check. Pedal placement feels perfect here, even if the wheel well offers less usable foot room than either the E30 or E36. There’s enough contrast between material tones to keep your interest but tempered by a businesslike layout. The E46 simply stuck in everywhere, with 255/40ZR18 rubber outback that gripped Mid-O’s tarmac far tighter than the previous M3s.

The Engine performance

The E46’s awe-inspiring driving dynamics cannot be complete without its 3.2-liter straight-six motor that develops 343bhp and 269ft-lb of pull, more than two-thirds of which is available at tick over. Although the top speed is restricted to 155mph the 0-60mph time comes down to 4.8 seconds.

Acceleration in third and fourth gears sees the car takes off in a fly-past of blurred colors. This performance has distinctively given the E46 an edge over its numerous rivals. Or, if you prefer, you can pull away from little more than walking pace in sixth gear. As the speed picks up, the rumbling beat at low revs gives way to a roaring wail that could form the soundtrack to some apocalyptic Hollywood epic.

If you still crave speed at an instance, all you need to do is simply press a button on the dash and the throttle response becomes more immediate. However, you’ll need to drive with even more finesse to keep things smooth and tidy.

The M3 is so sophisticated when it comes to power such that when the going gets damp you can prompt wheelspin at three-figure speeds. The honed chassis of the M3 does an admirable job of harnessing all the power and torque, but pushing 343bhp through the rear wheels of a comparatively light car is a surefire way for sideways action without a little additional help. Simply put, no performance coupé could come close to offering the same blend of talents as the E46 M3.
