Scion which translates to ‘descendant of a family or heir’’ is a discontinued marque of Toyota that debuted in 2003. Toyota brought in the Scion brand which was intended to appeal to younger customers. This concept was marketed as a youth brand in March 2002 at the New York Auto Show, featuring just two concept vehicles, the bbX (which became the xB), and the ccX (which became the tC). These products were inexpensive, stylish, and distinctive sport compact vehicles that employed a simplified “pure price” sales concept that eschewed traditional trim levels and dealer haggling. The vehicles were offered in a single trim with a range of dealer-installed options offered to buyers who intend to personalize their vehicles.

Scion peak sales was in 2006 with over 170,000 units sold. This led to its expansion into Canada in 2010. However, Toyota’s initial propositions of short product cycles and aggressive pricing based on low dealer margins became increasingly unsustainable as sales fell after the financial crisis of 2007 and 2008. Toyota, the parent company behind the Scion brand, had to discontinue this youth-focused nameplate in August 2016 and most of the Scion-branded models were rebadged as Toyotas. The rear-drive FR-S (rebadged Toyota 86) is a drift-ready two-door coupe. The iM (rebadged Corolla iM) is a fair attempt at an affordable Euro-style hatchback. The Scion bbX seats five on standard cloth upholstery. The cabin fails to impress, as many surfaces use low-rent materials, making the xB feel cheaper than rivals. You are sure to find a standard with a 6.1-inch touch-screen infotainment system, a six-speaker Pioneer audio system, Bluetooth, a USB port, an auxiliary audio input, and HD Radio. The infotainment controls are well-organized and easy to reach, but the gauges are in the middle of the dashboard, making them hard to read for some. On the bright side, it’s certainly spacious. Power comes from a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that puts out 158 horsepower. A five-speed manual transmission is standard, and a four-speed automatic is optional. The xB accelerates quickly from a stop, but it struggles when it comes to highway passing and merging. Neither transmission is great: The manual isn’t smooth, and the automatic isn’t responsive.

On its safety, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the bbX the highest rating of Good in four crash tests and the second-lowest rating of Marginal in the driver-side small overlap front test. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration did not fully test the bbX, but the model earned four stars in the organization’s rollover test. A rearview camera comes standard in the bbX with no other driver assistance features available.

The car combines its aggressive styling expected in a sporty coupe with its expansive cargo-hauling capability needed for light-duty work and play. To further explore the youthful exuberance, the roof of the car comprises two large power sunroofs, each made up of four glass panels. The roof panels tilt up individually, and then slide fore and aft toward the center of the roofline, creating large openings over the entire passenger compartment and cargo area. The vertical glass rear panel is a two-piece unit that can be retracted into the bumper and out of the way for easy access to the rear cargo area.

The interior feels good as the ccX accommodates four passengers comfortably with see-through bucket seats made of washable blue neoprene fabric and mesh netting. The front seat is fitted with five-point harness belts and sliding storage trays underneath. The rear seatbacks fold forward to provide ample cargo space and feature fold-up metal dividers to protect the front seatbacks from heavy or sharp-edged cargo.

The blue instrument cluster is center-dash mounted for reduced driver fatigue and better visibility. The seven-inch multi-display monitor that displays DVD entertainment, navigation, and audio systems makes it more comfortable for its occupant to have a relaxed experience. A remote control panel for the monitor and cell phone is conveniently located on the center console and is protected by a sliding acrylic blue cover.

The cargo area is equipped with six hidden tie-down hooks for convenient hauling and an electric-powered removable cooler that plugs into a conveniently located 12-volt power source. Under the hood of the ccX comes a 2.4-liter, dual overhead cam four-cylinder, accompanied by a four-speed automatic transmission.
