Business grants explained
Business grants provide non-repayable capital to start or scale a venture — a lifeline given how hard traditional loans can be. They're competitive and often come with training and mentorship.
Programmes to know
Well-known programmes for Nigerian entrepreneurs include (verify each on its official channel):
- Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF) — seed funding + training.
- SMEDAN Conditional Grant Scheme — for nano/micro businesses.
- Bank of Industry (BOI) YES — youth entrepreneurship support (loans and grants).
- LSETF — Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (state-level).
- NITDA — tech/digital innovation grants.
- AECF — international (Africa Enterprise Challenge Fund).
Tony Elumelu Foundation
TEF is one of Africa's largest entrepreneurship programmes: selected founders receive non-repayable seed funding (about $5,000) plus training and mentorship, applying free via TEFConnect. Its window has typically run 1 January to 1 March each year.
Government programmes
Beyond grants, government loan schemes like the Nigeria Youth Investment Fund also fund youth businesses — remember those are loans, not grants.
