“Free money, just pay a small fee” is the oldest con there is. Here's how to stay safe.

The one golden rule

Legitimate grants never charge you to apply, claim or “release” funds. If money must leave your pocket to get “free money”, it's a scam — every time.

Common grant cons

  • “Pay a processing/registration fee to claim your grant.”
  • “You've been selected” for a grant you never applied for.
  • “Send your bank details/OTP so we can pay you.”
  • “Agent can guarantee approval.”

Fake sites & pages

Scammers clone real programmes and create fake social-media pages using the names of TEF, government schemes, etc. Always reach programmes through their official website, not links in DMs or comments.

How to verify a grant

  1. Find the programme's official website independently (don't use the sender's link).
  2. Confirm the application window and process there.
  3. Check for a fee demand — any = scam.
  4. Be sceptical of urgency and “too good to be true” amounts.
