Please note
Belmadeng is an independent study platform and is not affiliated with NAFDAC. This is general information, not legal advice — register and verify products only through official NAFDAC channels (nafdac.gov.ng and the NAPAMS portal). Fees, timelines and requirements vary by product category and change — confirm the current tariff on the official portal, and beware agents charging inflated fees.
A registered company
Your business should be CAC-registered, and you register your company and product on NAPAMS.
Product details & samples
You’ll provide full product details (composition, use) and later submit samples for laboratory testing.
Labels & packaging
NAFDAC reviews your label/packaging artwork for compliance with its labelling regulations (product name, ingredients, batch, dates, and space for the NAFDAC number).
Facility (GMP)
Your production facility (local or foreign) must meet Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards and will be inspected.
Category-specific documents
- Food: production process details, ingredient information.
- Drugs: more detailed dossiers, stability data, GMP evidence.
- Cosmetics: ingredient list with concentrations and a safety assessment.
- Packaged water: water source and analysis details.
Tips
- Confirm the exact checklist for your category on NAPAMS.
- Get your label artwork compliant early.
- Prepare GMP evidence for inspection.
Core documents every applicant needs
Across product categories, a common set of documents recurs. Have these ready before you open an application:
- CAC certificate — your business must be registered (see CAC).
- Application letter addressed to the Director-General, NAFDAC.
- Product label / packaging artwork, compliant with NAFDAC labelling rules.
- Batch/product formulation and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Food handlers' / medical fitness certificates for production staff (tests typically include stool, urine, sputum, Widal and Hepatitis B).
- Trademark — recommended (optional for micro-scale) to protect your brand.
Facility and GMP requirements
NAFDAC doesn't just check paperwork — it inspects where you make the product. Your premises must meet Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP): adequate space, suitable equipment, and a designated production area protected from contamination. For small producers a building can be purpose-built or adapted, but higher-risk categories — including packaged water, dairy, meat and beverages — face stricter facility standards. A certificate of fumigation is commonly required. Prepare your facility before inspection to avoid the delays a failed GMP visit causes.
Extra requirements by product type
On top of the core set, each category adds its own: food needs shelf-life/formulation detail; drugs need a full technical dossier (CTD) and, for high-risk classes, a MAS scratch panel; cosmetics must meet ingredient-safety and labelling rules; and packaged water needs water-source analysis and the SON NIS standard. Check the specific page for your product so nothing is missed at submission.
Frequently asked questions
What do I need to register with NAFDAC?
A CAC-registered company, full product details and samples, compliant label/packaging artwork, a GMP-compliant facility, and category-specific documents.
Do I need a registered company?
Yes — register your business with the CAC first, then register your company and product on NAPAMS.
What are the label requirements?
NAFDAC reviews your packaging artwork for compliance — product name, ingredients, batch, dates and space for the NAFDAC number.
What does GMP mean?
Good Manufacturing Practice — the standard your facility must meet; NAFDAC inspects it before approval.
Do requirements vary by category?
Yes — food, drugs, cosmetics and packaged water each have specific documents (e.g. cosmetics need an ingredient list and safety assessment).
What do I need to register a product with NAFDAC?
The core set is a CAC certificate, an application letter to the Director-General, a compliant product label, batch/product formulation and SOPs, food handlers'/medical fitness certificates for production staff, and (recommended) a trademark. Your facility must also pass a GMP inspection, and each product type adds its own requirements.
Do I need CAC registration for NAFDAC?
Yes — your business must be registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission, and your CAC certificate is a core document for any NAFDAC product registration.
What is a food handlers' certificate?
A medical fitness certificate for your production staff, showing tests such as stool, urine, sputum, Widal and Hepatitis B. It confirms staff who handle products are fit to do so, and is required for food and related registrations.
Do I need a trademark to register with NAFDAC?
It's recommended to protect your brand, but it's not compulsory for every applicant — micro-scale businesses in particular may register without one. For packaged water and many products, securing a trademark (water falls under Class 32) is advisable.
Does NAFDAC inspect my factory?
Yes. Your premises are inspected against Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) — adequate space, suitable equipment and a contamination-protected production area. Higher-risk categories like packaged water, dairy and meat face stricter facility standards.
