Contents & notes: what this topic covers

Under Environmental Pollution, the JAMB Chemistry syllabus expects you to study:

  • 7. Environmental Pollution
  • (a) Air
  • (i) The natural gaseous constituents and ( their proportion in the air – nitrogen, oxygen, water vapour, ( carbon (IV) oxide and the noble gases (argon and neon) (
  • (ii) Factors responsible for variation of components of air in the environment
  • (iii) Air as a mixture and some uses of the noble gases
  • (b)(i) Air pollution: Examples of air pollutants such as H2S, CO, SO2, oxides of nitrogen, chlorofluorocarbons and dust
  • (ii) Sources and effects of pollutants
  • (c) Water pollution Sewage and oil pollution should be known
  • (d) Soil pollution: Oil spillage, biodegradable and non-biodegradable pollutants

Study notes & guidance

Study Environmental Pollution using a recommended Chemistry textbook that follows the JAMB syllabus. Work through the contents listed above one by one, make brief notes in your own words, and then practise as many questions on this topic as you can — in Chemistry, understanding and steady practice matter far more than memorising. Use the objectives below as a checklist: if you can do each one confidently, you have mastered this topic.

Objectives — candidates should be able to

After studying Environmental Pollution, you should be able to:

  1. (i) give reason (s) for the existence of air as a mixture;
  2. Identify the principle involved in the separation of air components;
  3. State reasons for the variation in the composition of air in the environment;
  4. Specify the uses of some of the constituents of air; (v) identify the different types of pollution and pollutants; (vi) specify different sources of pollutants; (vii) classify pollutants as biodegradable and non-biodegradable; (viii) specify the effects of pollution on the environment; and (ix) identify measures for control of environmental pollution.

These objectives are from the official JAMB syllabus. Use them as a checklist — if you can do each one confidently, you have mastered this topic.
