Contents & notes: what this topic covers

Under Coordinate Geometry, the JAMB Mathematics syllabus expects you to study:

  • (a) midpoint and gradient of a line segment;
  • (b) distance between two points;
  • (c) parallel and perpendicular lines;
  • (d) equations of straight lines.

Study notes & guidance

Study Coordinate Geometry using a recommended Mathematics textbook that follows the JAMB syllabus. Work through the contents listed above one by one, make brief notes in your own words, and then practise as many questions on this topic as you can — in Mathematics, understanding and steady practice matter far more than memorising. Use the objectives below as a checklist: if you can do each one confidently, you have mastered this topic.

Objectives — candidates should be able to

After studying Coordinate Geometry, you should be able to:

  1. Calculate the perimeters and areas of triangles, quadrilaterals, circles and composite figures;
  2. Find the length of an arc, a chord, perimeters and areas of sectors and segments of circles;
  3. Calculate total surface areas and volumes of cuboids, cylinders. cones, pyramids, prisms, spheres and composite figures;
  4. Determine the distance between two points on the earth’s surface.

These objectives are from the official JAMB syllabus. Use them as a checklist — if you can do each one confidently, you have mastered this topic.

Then practise: the fastest way to lock in a topic is to test yourself under time. Go to CBT practice →
