What the JAMB eligibility checker is
The JAMB Eligibility Checker is an official tool inside JAMB’s Integrated Brochure and Syllabus System (IBASS). It lets a prospective UTME or Direct Entry candidate confirm, before registering or changing course, whether they qualify for a particular programme at a particular institution — based on their O’Level credits and passes, A’Level results (for Direct Entry), and UTME subject combination. In short, it answers one crucial question: “Am I actually eligible for this course at this school?”
This matters because many candidates are refused admission not for low scores, but because they never met a requirement they could have checked in two minutes — a missing O’Level credit, the wrong subject combination, or a course their chosen school does not offer. The eligibility checker is how you avoid that.
The official eligibility checker link
Use only JAMB’s official portal — never a third-party “checker” that asks for payment or your JAMB password:
- Open ibass.jamb.gov.ng and choose Eligibility Checker, or go straight to eligibility.jamb.gov.ng.
- You can also use the IBASS mobile app, which carries the same checker plus the brochure, e-syllabus and other tools.
The checker is completely free, and you do not need to log in with your registration details to use it.
How to use the JAMB eligibility checker, step by step
- Open the eligibility checker on IBASS (link above).
- Select your Mode of Entry — UTME or Direct Entry (DE).
- Select your Institution Type — e.g. degree-awarding institution (university), ND (polytechnic), NCE (college of education) or NID.
- Select the Institution Category, then the specific Institution you want.
- Select the Programme (course) you intend to study.
- Enter your O’Level credits and passes (and, for Direct Entry, your A’Level credits and passes).
- Choose your UTME subject combination — English Language is already selected by default; add your other three subjects.
- Click Check Program Eligibility and read the result.
What each field means
- Mode of Entry: UTME is the standard route via the exam; Direct Entry is for candidates with A’Level, NCE, ND, HND or equivalent entering at 200 level.
- O’Level credits (A1–C6): your pass-at-credit-level grades in WAEC, NECO or NABTEB. Most courses need five relevant credits, including English and (for many courses) Mathematics.
- O’Level passes (D7–E8): weaker passes below credit level — some courses accept a pass in a non-core subject, most do not.
- A’Level credits and passes: only for Direct Entry candidates, from your advanced qualification.
- UTME subject combination: the four subjects you will sit — Use of English plus the three required for your course. Getting these wrong is the single most common eligibility failure.
How to read your result
After you click check, IBASS tells you whether your details make you eligible for that programme at that institution. If it says you qualify, note the exact requirements it lists and proceed to register. If it says you do not, it is because one of the inputs does not meet the requirement — usually the subject combination or an O’Level credit. Fix that (see below) rather than registering and hoping.

What to do if you are not eligible
An “not eligible” result is useful — it saves you a wasted registration. Your options:
- Fix your subject combination. If the three UTME subjects were wrong, correct them (before you pay for registration) using the checker.
- Choose a course you qualify for. If your O’Level or subjects don’t fit, consider a related course — see good courses for a lower score.
- Consider another institution. The same course can have different requirements across schools — check a few.
- Already registered? Use the eligibility check before a change of course or institution so your new choice is one you actually qualify for.

Eligibility checker vs brochure vs CAPS
- The brochure lists all courses, institutions and their requirements — the reference document.
- The eligibility checker takes your results and tells you whether you personally qualify for a specific course and school — a personalised check against the brochure.
- CAPS is where admission is actually offered and accepted, after the exam — a different, later stage.
Use them in that order: brochure to plan, eligibility checker to confirm, CAPS to accept your offer.
Troubleshooting and tips
- Use a good browser. Chrome or Firefox load the checker most reliably; let the page finish loading before selecting fields.
- Enter results honestly. The check is only as accurate as the grades and subjects you enter.
- Check before you pay. Confirm eligibility before you complete and pay for UTME registration or a change of course — subjects can’t be changed afterwards.
- It doesn’t guarantee admission. Being eligible means you meet the requirements; admission still depends on your score, Post-UTME and competition.
