What counts as a "credit"
O’Level results (WAEC, NECO or NABTEB) are graded A1 to F9. Only A1–C6 count as credits. D7 and E8 are ordinary passes (not credits), and F9 is a fail. For university admission through JAMB, passes are not enough — you need credits.
The five-credit rule
The baseline for degree admission is at least five O’Level credits (A1–C6) in relevant subjects. Some competitive courses ask for more specific or higher grades, but five relevant credits is the floor almost everywhere. Polytechnics and colleges of education may accept fewer for certain programmes — check your course.
English and Mathematics
A credit in English Language is required for virtually every course. A credit in Mathematics is required for the sciences, engineering, and most commercial and management courses; many Arts and some Social-Science courses don’t require a Maths credit in the combination — but a lot of institutions still expect it, so confirm your exact course.
Your O’Level must match your course
Getting five credits isn’t enough if they’re the wrong five. Your credits must include the subjects your course requires — for example, Medicine needs credits in Biology, Chemistry and Physics; Accounting needs Mathematics and Economics. Note that your O’Level subjects and your UTME subjects are related but not identical. Confirm both together with the Subject Combination Checker and the official brochure.
Can I combine two sittings?
Many institutions let you combine credits from two sittings (for example, WAEC in one year and NECO in another) to reach your five. However, some competitive courses insist on five credits at one sitting. Don’t assume — check your chosen course and school.
Upload your O’Level to JAMB CAPS — don’t skip this
This is where admissions are silently lost. Your O’Level results must be uploaded to JAMB CAPS — uploading them only to your school’s portal is not the same thing, and the systems don’t sync. If CAPS shows "Awaiting Result", JAMB flags you as ineligible and your institution can’t admit you. If you don’t have your results yet
If you’re still waiting for WAEC/NECO when you register for UTME, you can register with an "awaiting result" status and add the results once they’re out — but you must upload them to CAPS before admission can be processed.
