Check with *565*0# (USSD)
The quickest way — no internet needed:
- Use the phone number linked to your bank account/BVN.
- Dial *565*0#.
- After a short verification, your 11-digit BVN shows on screen.
A small network charge (around ₦20) applies, and it works on MTN, Glo, Airtel and 9mobile.
Check in your bank app
Open your bank’s mobile app and look under Profile / Account Settings / Account Info — most major bank apps display your BVN there for free.
Check at your bank
Walk into any branch of your bank with a valid ID; customer service can retrieve your BVN after verifying you — free. Some banks also offer a BVN inquiry option at the ATM.
If your registered number has changed
*565*0# only works on the number linked to your BVN. If that line is gone, use your bank app, visit your branch, or contact the NIBSS BVN helpdesk (see retrieval) — and update your phone number with your bank.

The fastest way to find your BVN is the official USSD code: dial *565*0# from the phone number linked to your BVN, and your 11-digit number appears on screen in seconds. It works across all networks and needs no internet. Two conditions matter: you must use the same phone number registered against your BVN (the code won't return it on any other line), and a small network fee (commonly around ₦20) may apply. If your number is linked to more than one BVN, the USSD method won't return a result.
The bank app and branch
There are two more reliable routes. First, your bank's mobile app or internet banking: most banks display your BVN under Profile, Account Information or Settings — usually free once you're logged in. Second, your bank branch: walk in with a valid ID and staff can retrieve your BVN for you. Between the USSD code, your bank app and a branch visit, you have several ways to confirm your BVN without needing anyone to “look it up” for you online.
Protecting your BVN
Because your BVN identifies you across the banking system, treat it with care. Only check it through official channels — the *565*0# code on your own phone, your bank's genuine app, or a branch — and never on a random website or a phone you don't trust. Don't hand your BVN to strangers or post it anywhere, and be especially wary of anyone who calls claiming to be “from your bank” and asks you to confirm your BVN together with an OTP, PIN or card details: that combination is how scams succeed.
