Please note & stay safe
Belmadeng is an independent study platform and is not affiliated with NIBSS, the CBN or any bank. This is an informational guide — check, enrol or update your BVN only through official channels (your bank, the official NIBSS BVN validation portal, or the BVN helpdesk). Never share your BVN, OTP, PIN or card details with anyone, and never pay “agents” promising shortcuts.
Who needs to enrol
Anyone who wants to open or operate a Nigerian bank account needs a BVN. You enrol once — if you already have a BVN, do not enrol again (you should have only one).
It’s free
BVN enrolment is free at any bank branch. Do not pay anyone to “get” a BVN for you.
What to bring
- A valid means of identification (NIN slip, driver’s licence, voter’s card or international passport).
- Your correct personal details (name, date of birth) matching your other records.
The enrolment process
- Visit any bank branch.
- Fill the BVN enrolment form.
- Have your biometrics captured (fingerprints and photo).
- You’ll receive your BVN (often by SMS/slip) after processing.
Nigerians abroad (NRBVN)
Nigerians in the diaspora can enrol through official routes such as NIBSS diaspora / Non-Resident BVN (NRBVN) arrangements or approved international centres/embassies — see our BVN for Nigerians abroad guide. Avoid unofficial agents.
Tips
- Never enrol twice — one BVN for life.
- Ensure your name and DOB match your NIN and documents to avoid corrections later.
- Keep your BVN private.
Registering at a bank branch
BVN registration is done in person at a bank branch (or an approved diaspora centre) — it cannot be completed fully online, because it requires biometric capture. If you're opening your first account, the bank typically enrols your BVN as part of the account-opening/KYC process. If you already bank but somehow don't have a BVN, visit any branch of your bank to enrol. Bring a valid means of identification and be ready for fingerprint and photo capture.
What happens during enrolment
At enrolment, the bank captures your biometrics (fingerprints and facial image) along with your personal details — name, date of birth and contact information. This data is submitted to NIBSS, which issues your unique 11-digit BVN and links it to your accounts. Enrolment itself is free. Because your details here become your banking identity, check that everything is captured correctly — especially your name spelling and date of birth — before you leave, since mismatches cause problems later.
One BVN, once
You only ever enrol for a BVN once. Because it's tied to your biometrics and follows you for life, that single BVN automatically links to every account you open at any Nigerian bank — you don't register again at each bank. If you've lost or forgotten your number, retrieve the existing one rather than trying to enrol afresh (see retrieval); registering twice creates duplicate-BVN problems that then have to be merged. Nigerians abroad can enrol through approved diaspora channels.
