What a TIN is
A Tax Identification Number (TIN) identifies your business for tax purposes. It is issued in connection with the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) and is separate from your CAC registration number.
Getting your TIN
When you register a company (and increasingly a business name) with CAC, a TIN is generated/linked as part of the process — CAC and FIRS systems are integrated.
Activate with FIRS
You typically need to activate/validate your TIN with FIRS (via firs.gov.ng) so you can file taxes and use it for official transactions.
State tax registration
You may also need to register with your State Internal Revenue Service for state-level taxes (e.g. for employees’ PAYE). CAC registration alone doesn’t cover all tax obligations.
Why you need it
Your TIN is required to open a corporate bank account, file taxes, bid for contracts, and access many government and financial services.
Tips
- Activate your TIN with FIRS after registration.
- Register with your State IRS where required.
- Keep your TIN and CAC documents together.
