Please note & stay safe
Belmadeng is an independent study platform and is not affiliated with the FRSC or any state agency. This is an informational guide — apply and renew your driver’s licence only on the official portal (nigeriadriverslicence.frsc.gov.ng) and pay through official channels (Remita or participating banks). Beware touts and clone sites, and never try to “buy” a licence without the required driving-school, test and biometric steps.
When to renew
You can renew from 30 days before the expiry date — and it’s best not to let it lapse, since driving with an expired licence is an offence.
How to renew (step by step)
- Go to nigeriadriverslicence.frsc.gov.ng and initiate a renewal.
- Confirm your details (update them with supporting documents if needed).
- Pay the fee (online or bank) and confirm payment.
- Attend the VIO (where required) and FRSC biometric capture in person.
- Track and collect your renewed licence.
No repeat driving school
For a renewal you generally don’t repeat driving school or the full test if your record is in good standing — which makes renewal faster and cheaper than a first licence.
Renewal fees
The same FRSC fees apply — ₦15,000 (3-year) or ₦21,000 (5-year) — plus biometrics; many renew for under ₦30,000 total done directly. Renewal often takes about 1–2 weeks.
Switching to 5 years
You can switch from a 3-year to a 5-year licence at renewal by paying the higher fee — no extra documents or steps.
Tips
- Renew before expiry (from 30 days prior).
- Do it yourself on the portal to save money.
- Keep your details consistent with your NIN.
Renew from 30 days before expiry
You can apply to renew your driver's licence from 30 days before its expiry date — and it's wise not to leave it later, since driving on an expired licence is an offence and a valid licence is often needed for other purposes. Renewal is initiated on the FRSC NDL portal: you provide your existing licence number, confirm your details, pay, and complete any required steps. Renewing on time keeps you legal on the road without a gap in your entitlement.
No school, permit or test again
The good news: renewal is much simpler and cheaper than a fresh licence, because you don't repeat driving school, the learner's permit, the CBT or the VIO test. You've already proven competence. Depending on how old your previous licence is, you may need a fresh biometric capture (commonly if the last one was some years ago), but the training-and-testing chain isn't redone. That's why the renewal cost is essentially the FRSC fee (plus any biometric refresh), well below the full first-time all-in cost.
Renewal vs re-issue
Two portal options serve different situations. Choose Renewal when your licence has expired (or is about to) and you're extending its validity. Choose Re-issue when your current licence is still valid but you need a new card — for example because it's lost, damaged or defaced, or you want to add/adjust classes as regulations permit. Picking the right option keeps your application clean. As always, use the official portal and Remita for payment, and keep your receipts and RRR.
