Your destination’s visa
Important: a “student visa” is issued by the country you’re travelling to (e.g. the UK, Canada, US), not by Nigeria. Nigeria’s NIS gives you the passport; the destination’s embassy gives you the study visa. Apply to that embassy with your admission letter and required documents.

Get your passport early
If you're a student planning to travel — for study, exchange, a conference or a competition — your Nigerian passport is the foundation, and it takes time, so start early. Apply or renew through the official NIS process (increasingly online), and make sure your data (name, date of birth) matches your other documents like your NIN and academic records, since mismatches cause problems at visa and enrolment stages. A valid passport with enough validity remaining (many countries require at least six months beyond your travel dates) is the first thing to sort out.
Visas for studying abroad
An important distinction: the NIS issues your passport, but not your study visa. The visa to study in another country is issued by that country's embassy or consulate, each with its own requirements — typically an admission/offer letter, proof of funds, and academic documents. Start that process as soon as you have an offer, because student-visa timelines can be long. The NIS's role for outbound students is your passport and, if needed, an emergency travel document.
Travelling within West Africa
For travel within the ECOWAS region (Ghana, Benin, Togo and other member states), Nigerians benefit from free movement, and the NIS issues an ECOWAS Travel Certificate that can be used for intra-regional travel. This is useful for students attending events or programmes in neighbouring countries.
