This is general information — use official NCC channels (ncc.gov.ng, the Consumer Portal, DND 2442 and the toll-free line 622). Short codes, tariffs and processes can change and vary by network — confirm with the NCC or your operator.

Fast data depletion

Data can drain quickly from video streaming, auto-updates, cloud backups and background apps — so rapid depletion isn’t always wrong billing. But if figures look inconsistent, you’re entitled to an explanation and can challenge the charge.

Failed purchases (debited, not credited)

A common issue: your bank/wallet is debited but airtime/data isn’t delivered. The NCC and CBN have been developing a joint framework for automated reversals and standard error reporting across banks, operators and payment providers — so keep evidence and push for a reversal.

Check before you dispute

  • Review your data usage (settings show per-app usage).
  • Check for auto-renew bundles and VAS subscriptions.
  • Keep the debit alert/receipt for failed purchases.

How to dispute

Report to your operator (and your bank/payment provider for failed purchases) with dates, amounts and references, and request a reversal/refund. If unresolved, escalate to the NCC via 622 or the Consumer Portal.

Tips

  • Manage background data to slow depletion.
  • Keep the debit receipt for failed top-ups.
  • Escalate unresolved cases to the NCC.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my data finish so fast?
Video streaming, auto-updates, cloud backups and background apps can consume data quickly, so fast depletion isn’t always wrong billing — but you can request an explanation and challenge inconsistent charges.
I was debited but didn’t get airtime/data — what do I do?
Keep the debit alert/receipt and report to both your operator and your bank/payment provider, requesting a reversal; the NCC and CBN have been developing a framework for automated reversals.
How do I dispute a telecom charge?
Report to your operator (and bank for failed purchases) with dates, amounts and references, request a refund/reversal, and escalate unresolved cases to the NCC via 622 or the Consumer Portal.
How can I reduce data usage?
Manage background data, disable auto-updates on mobile data, and watch streaming quality; check per-app usage in your phone settings.
Can I get a refund for a failed data purchase?
Yes — push for a reversal with your evidence; keep the debit receipt and escalate to the NCC if it isn’t resolved.
