What porting is
Mobile Number Portability (MNP), or “porting”, lets you move your number to a different network (e.g. from MTN to Airtel) while keeping the same phone number. It’s an NCC consumer right that encourages competition.
How to port (3232)
The standard porting short code is 3232. Typically you text a keyword (e.g. PORT) to 3232 to get a unique porting code, then complete the switch at your new network’s outlet/SIM process (with a properly registered, NIN-linked SIM).
Eligibility
Your line should be active and properly registered, not currently under an unresolved dispute, and (usually) it must have been a set minimum time since your last port. Confirm current rules with the networks.
How long it takes
Porting usually completes within a short window (often a couple of business days). Your old service continues until the switch finalises.
After you port

How to port, step by step
Mobile Number Portability (MNP) lets you keep your exact phone number while switching to a different network — useful if your current operator's service or pricing no longer works for you. The general flow:
- Choose your new network and make sure it has good coverage where you live and work.
- Clear any debts/obligations on your current line first.
- Request the port at the new operator (a service centre, or their porting process), with your NIN and identification.
- Wait for activation — your number moves to the new network and your old SIM stops working.
Your number stays the same throughout; only the network behind it changes.
NIN is now required to port
Because NIN is a prerequisite for all SIM transactions, you now need your NIN to port, and your details must match your NIMC records — the new operator verifies your identity (often biometrically) as part of the switch. So before you start, make sure your SIM registration and NIN linkage are in order. A mismatch is the most common reason a port request stalls.
Timelines and limits
Porting isn't instant, but it's quick — typically completed within a day or two once your request is validated. Two limits to know: after porting, you generally can't port again for about 90 days, and you should settle any outstanding balances before switching. Your saved contacts and number stay yours; what changes is coverage, tariffs and value-adds. If a port fails or drags on unfairly, raise it with the new operator and, if needed, the NCC on 622.
