Please note
Belmadeng is an independent study platform and is not affiliated with NELFUND or the Federal Government. This is general information, not financial advice — apply only through the official portal (nelf.gov.ng / portal.nelf.gov.ng). Applying is free — no one legitimate charges a fee, and no agent can “guarantee” your loan. Amounts, terms and eligibility change — confirm the current details on the official portal.
Why this happens
You can only apply once your institution has uploaded your student records to the NELFUND Student Verification Portal. If your school hasn't done so yet, you won't be able to complete an application.
The verification portal
NELFUND verifies each applicant's enrolment via records the school uploads. No upload = no verification = no loan, even if you personally qualify.
Contact your institution's bursary or student affairs office and ask them to upload/verify your records on the NELFUND portal. The more students who ask, the faster schools tend to act.
Is your school even eligible?
Confirm your school is a public (federal or state) institution — private institutions aren't covered. The scheme has expanded to many state schools in 2026, so check the current covered list. See eligibility.
While you wait
Meanwhile, explore student grants, PTDF scholarships and other funding options, and keep your NIN and bank details ready so you can apply the moment your records go up.
Tips
- Push your bursary/student affairs office to upload records.
- Confirm your school is public & covered.
- Keep your documents ready to apply fast.
Why your school must be verified first
You can't complete a NELFUND application until your institution has uploaded and verified your records on the NELFUND Student Verification System. This step is how NELFUND confirms you're a genuine, enrolled student and knows your exact fee schedule — the tuition component is paid directly to the school, so the school has to be onboarded and your record present. If your school (or your specific record) isn't showing, the block is almost always at this verification stage, not with you.
What to do if your school isn't listed
Take it up with your institution first, not just NELFUND:
- Contact your school's bursary or registrar/ICT unit and ask whether they've onboarded with NELFUND and uploaded your record.
- Confirm your details (name, matric/JAMB number) are correctly entered in the school's records.
- Check the portal periodically — institutions and records are added in stages.
Polite, persistent follow-up with the school is usually what gets a missing record uploaded.
Confirm your institution qualifies
Before assuming an error, confirm your school is actually eligible: NELFUND currently covers public universities, polytechnics, colleges of education and recognised vocational institutions — private universities are not covered, so they won't appear. If yours is a qualifying public institution and still isn't listed, it simply may not have completed onboarding yet; keep checking and keep prompting the school. See eligibility for the full picture.
Frequently asked questions
Why can't I apply — my school isn't listed on NELFUND?
Because your institution hasn't uploaded your student records to the NELFUND Student Verification Portal yet; without that upload you can't be verified or apply.
How do I get my school onto NELFUND?
Contact your bursary or student affairs office and ask them to upload/verify your records on the NELFUND portal.
Is my private university covered?
No — NELFUND covers public (federal or state) institutions; private institutions aren't covered.
Does NELFUND now include state schools?
It has expanded to many state institutions in 2026 — check the current covered list on the official portal.
What can I do while waiting for my school to be added?
Explore student grants and PTDF scholarships, keep your NIN and bank details ready, and apply as soon as your records are uploaded.
Why isn't my institution listed on NELFUND?
Usually because your school hasn't completed onboarding or hasn't uploaded your record to the NELFUND Student Verification System yet. Records and institutions are added in stages, so the block is typically at the school's verification step.
What do I do if my school isn't on NELFUND?
Contact your school's bursary or registrar/ICT unit to confirm they've onboarded with NELFUND and uploaded your record, check your details are correct in their system, and keep checking the portal, as institutions are added in stages.
Who do I contact at my school about NELFUND?
Your bursary, registrar or ICT/student records unit — they handle onboarding with NELFUND and uploading student records to the verification system. Polite, persistent follow-up is usually what gets a missing record added.
Can private schools be listed on NELFUND?
Not currently. NELFUND covers public universities, polytechnics, colleges of education and recognised vocational institutions, so private universities won't appear on the system as it stands.
How long does institution onboarding take?
