Everything to have ready before you apply — so your NELFUND application isn't delayed.

Please note

Belmadeng is an independent study platform and is not affiliated with NELFUND or the Federal Government. This is general information, not financial advice — apply only through the official portal (nelf.gov.ng / portal.nelf.gov.ng). Applying is free — no one legitimate charges a fee, and no agent can “guarantee” your loan. Amounts, terms and eligibility change — confirm the current details on the official portal.

Core requirements

  • Nigerian citizenship and enrolment in an eligible public institution.
  • A valid NIN.
  • Your JAMB number or matric number.
  • A working email address.

Documents to upload

Typically your JAMB admission letter (and/or school letter of identification / student ID). Confirm the exact upload list on your dashboard, as it can vary.

NIN must match

Your name on your NIN must match your school records. A mismatch is a common cause of delays or rejection — fix it first (see NIN modification) if needed.

Bank account & BVN

You need a BVN and an active Nigerian bank account in your own name — the upkeep allowance is paid there. It must not be someone else's account.

Guarantor question

Guarantor rules have changed over time — earlier versions asked for guarantors; the process has since been simplified for many applicants. Check the current requirement on the official portal before assuming you do or don't need one.

Tips

  • Fix any NIN name mismatch first.
  • Use your own bank account.
  • Have your admission letter scanned and ready.

Your document checklist

Have these ready before you start — missing or mismatched items are the top cause of delay:

Getting these consistent up front makes the application quick.

Bank account rules (no wallets)

The bank account you register matters more than people expect. It must be a regular bank account whose name and details match your BVN — the upkeep allowance is paid there. Fintech wallet accounts (such as OPay or PalmPay) are not accepted for upkeep, so use a conventional bank account. A wrong account number or a BVN that doesn't match the account is the single most common reason upkeep fails to arrive after approval, so double-check this before submitting.

NELFUND verifies you electronically, so your identity records have to line up. Your name and details across NIN, BVN and JAMB should be consistent, and your NIN must be linked to your JAMB profile (resolve this on the JAMB portal if verification fails). A guarantor is not required anymore — the system leans on these digital checks instead. Fixing a mismatch before you apply saves you a rejection and a re-application.
