Please note

Belmadeng is an independent study platform and is not affiliated with the National Population Commission (NPC). This is an informational guide — register births or deaths and obtain certificates only through official NPC channels (nationalpopulation.gov.ng and its self-service portals). Timely birth registration is free, and you should use the verifiable digital certificate; beware touts and fake documents. Note: a sworn age declaration is made in a High Court, not by the NPC.

Who this is for

This is for registering the birth of a child born in Nigeria, with at least one Nigerian parent who holds a valid birth certificate. Register as early as possible — it’s free while the child is young.

What you need

  • The child’s NIN (enrol for a child’s NIN first if needed).
  • At least one parent who is Nigerian with a valid birth certificate.
  • An active phone number and email.

How to register

  1. Go to the NPC birth registration self-service portal (via nationalpopulation.gov.ng → Services).
  2. Read and accept the guidelines, choose New Application, and enter your email to get a payment reference.
  3. Pay online (if applicable), then complete the form with the child’s and parents’ details.
  4. Submit and note your reference to track status.

The fee (free under 5)

Birth registration is free for children under 5 years, and ₦2,000 for children aged 5 and older, payable online.

Get the certificate

Once processed, you’re notified and can download the official birth certificate from your NPC account (often downloadable once — use reprint if needed).

Tips

  • Register before age 5 to do it free.
  • Have the child’s NIN ready.
  • Enter details accurately — corrections are harder later.

Free for under-5 at NPC centres

An important thing to know: birth registration for children under 5 is free at NPC registration centres nationwide. So the cheapest, most reliable route for a young child is simply to visit a centre in person. Online self-service is also available and convenient, but it typically carries a convenience fee, and there has been public debate about the amounts charged on the portal. Because fees change and have been contested, treat any figure as indicative and confirm the current position on the official NPC channels — and remember the free in-person route exists.

NIN and parent conditions

Whether online or in person, birth registration has clear conditions. The child must have been born in Nigeria and have a NIN; at least one parent must be Nigerian; and for online self-service, one parent must already hold a valid birth certificate. You'll also provide the child's biodata, a valid email and phone number. If the child doesn't yet have a NIN, sort that first (see NIN for children) — it's central to the process and to keeping the child's records consistent everywhere.

Downloading and reprints

After a successful application you can download the certificate from your NPC account, but only once. If you need another copy later — and you likely will, for school, exams or a passport — you apply through the Certificate Reprint module rather than re-registering. Keep your reference number to track the application, and store a safe digital and printed copy once you've downloaded it. Since all payments are non-refundable, double-check every detail (especially name spelling and date of birth) before you submit and pay.
