How NPC records work

The NPC records births and deaths. For a child, you register the birth and download a birth certificate; an adult not registered at birth gets an attestation of birth instead. These documents — in their verifiable digital form — are what you need for a passport, NIN, exams and admission. You can also correct your date of birth, get a reprint, or register a death.

What does the NPC do?
The National Population Commission handles civil registration in Nigeria — births, deaths, birth attestation and related records — and conducts the national population census.
How do I get a birth certificate in Nigeria?
For a child, register the birth on NPC’s self-service portal and download the certificate. Adults who were not registered at birth apply instead for an Attestation of Birth.
Is birth registration free?
Birth registration for children under 5 is free; for children 5 and older it costs ₦2,000, and an adult Birth Attestation costs ₦3,000 — all payable online.
