BVN: your banking ID

The BVN identifies you across the banking system and links all your accounts. It’s from the CBN/NIBSS.

NIN: your national ID

The NIN is your national identity number from NIMC, used for SIMs, passports, exams (JAMB/WAEC/NECO) and government services.

Why you need both

They’re different numbers but are being harmonised, and the CBN now requires both linked to your bank account — or it can face a Post No Debit restriction. Some BVN holders have even been auto-allocated a NIN.

Tips

  • Get and safeguard both.
  • Keep your name and DOB consistent across them.
  • Use NIN for exams and BVN for banking.

The key difference

The BVN and NIN are both 11-digit numbers you hold one of for life, which is why they're so often confused — but they belong to different systems:

One is about banking; the other is about national identity.

When each is used

They show up in different places. Your BVN is used for banking — opening and verifying accounts, loans, and confirming your identity to financial institutions. Your NIN is used far more broadly across government and daily life — SIM registration, passport and other government services, and exam registration (JAMB, WAEC, NECO, NABTEB). So the NIN is your general-purpose identity, while the BVN is specifically your banking identity. Increasingly, though, the two are linked together behind the scenes.

Why you need both

For a modern Nigerian bank account you now need both — regulation requires an account to carry a BVN and a NIN, with the details matching. If either is missing or inconsistent, the account can be restricted (Post No Debit). So rather than choosing between them, make sure you have both, both are correct, and both are linked to your account. If you're missing the NIN, enrol through NIMC; if you're missing the BVN, enrol at your bank.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between BVN and NIN?
BVN is your banking identity (from CBN/NIBSS, checked with *565*0#); NIN is your national identity (from NIMC, checked with *346#). Both are 11 digits.
Do I need both BVN and NIN?
Yes — the CBN requires both linked to your bank account, and the NIN is needed for exams, SIMs, passports and more.
Are BVN and NIN the same?
No — they are separate numbers from different bodies, though they are being harmonised.
Which do I need to open a bank account?
You need a BVN (and now a NIN too) to open and fully operate a bank account.
Which do I need for JAMB/WAEC/NECO?
The NIN — exam bodies require your NIN, not your BVN.
What is the difference between BVN and NIN?
The BVN (Bank Verification Number) is a banking identifier from the CBN/NIBSS that links your accounts across Nigerian banks. The NIN (National Identification Number) is your national identity number from NIMC in the central identity database. Both are 11 digits and one-per-person, but one is about banking, the other about national identity.
When do I use my BVN vs my NIN?
Your BVN is used for banking — opening and verifying accounts, loans, confirming identity to financial institutions. Your NIN is used more broadly — SIM registration, passport and government services, and exam registration (JAMB, WAEC, NECO, NABTEB). The NIN is your general-purpose identity; the BVN is your banking identity.
Do I need both a BVN and a NIN?
Yes — a modern Nigerian bank account now requires both, with the details matching. If either is missing or inconsistent, the account can be restricted (Post No Debit). Make sure you have both, both are correct, and both are linked to your account.
Are BVN and NIN the same number?
No — they're different numbers from different bodies (BVN from CBN/NIBSS, NIN from NIMC). Both happen to be 11 digits and one-per-person, which causes confusion, but they serve different systems and you need both for banking.
Which is more important, BVN or NIN?
Neither replaces the other — the NIN is broader (identity across government and daily life) while the BVN is specific to banking. For a bank account you need both, linked and matching, so it's not a choice between them.
