This is an informational guide — check, enrol or update your BVN only through official channels (your bank, the official NIBSS BVN validation portal, or the BVN helpdesk). Never share your BVN, OTP, PIN or card details with anyone, and never pay “agents” promising shortcuts.

Why you must link both

The CBN requires every bank account to have both a BVN and a NIN linked. This ties your account firmly to your verified identity. The NIN and BVN are also being harmonised.

What PND means

Accounts without both a linked BVN and NIN can be placed on “Post No Debit” (PND) — meaning you can receive money but cannot debit/spend from the account until you comply.

How to link

  1. Confirm your BVN (dial *565*0#) and your NIN (dial *346#).
  2. Take both numbers to your bank (branch, app or the channel your bank provides).
  3. The bank validates and links them to your account.

Check your BVN & NIN first

Make sure your name and date of birth match across your BVN, NIN and bank records — a mismatch can block linking. Fix any error via BVN modification or NIN modification.

Lifting a restriction

If your account is already restricted (PND), link both your BVN and NIN through your bank; once validated, the bank lifts the restriction.

Tips

  • Link before any deadline to avoid a PND.
  • Keep your details consistent across BVN, NIN and bank.
  • Do it through your bank — never via random links.

Nigerian banking regulation now requires every account to have both a BVN and a NIN attached, and for the two to be consistent with your account details. The goal is a single, verified identity across the financial system. If an account is missing either number — or the details don't match — the bank may place it on Post No Debit (PND), meaning you can receive money but can't debit or transact until you fix it. So linking isn't optional housekeeping; it keeps your account fully usable.

Linking is straightforward. First, confirm both numbers: dial *565*0# for your BVN and *346# for your NIN (each from the relevant registered line). Then provide them to your bank — often you can do this in the bank's app (a “link NIN” or update-KYC option) or by visiting a branch with both numbers and a valid ID. The bank updates your record so your account carries both. Make sure the name and date of birth on your BVN, NIN and account all match, or the link may be rejected.

If your account is already restricted (PND) for missing BVN/NIN, the fix is the same: obtain both numbers, ensure the details match, and take them to your bank (app or branch) to update your KYC. Once the bank verifies and links them, it lifts the restriction and your account works normally again. If a mismatch is the problem (e.g. your name differs across records), you may first need a correction so the two align. Do this promptly — a restricted account can't send money or pay bills.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to link my BVN and NIN?
Yes — the CBN requires every account to have both a BVN and a NIN linked; otherwise the account can be restricted.
What is Post No Debit (PND)?
A restriction where you can receive money but cannot debit/spend from the account — applied to accounts that don’t have both BVN and NIN linked.
How do I link my BVN to my NIN?
Confirm your BVN (*565*0#) and NIN (*346#), then take both to your bank (branch/app) to validate and link them to your account.
How do I lift a PND restriction?
Link both your BVN and NIN through your bank; once validated, the bank lifts the restriction.
Why won’t my BVN and NIN link?
Often a name or date-of-birth mismatch — make sure your details match across BVN, NIN and bank, and correct any error first.
Why must I link my BVN and NIN?
Nigerian banking regulation now requires every account to have both a BVN and a NIN attached and consistent with your details, for a single verified identity across the financial system. An account missing either — or with mismatched details — may be placed on Post No Debit (PND) until fixed.
How do I link my BVN to my NIN?
Confirm both numbers (dial *565*0# for BVN, *346# for NIN), then provide them to your bank — often via a 'link NIN'/update-KYC option in the bank's app, or by visiting a branch with both numbers and valid ID. Ensure the name and date of birth match across your BVN, NIN and account.
What is Post No Debit (PND)?
A restriction a bank places on an account — often for a missing or mismatched BVN/NIN — where you can receive money but can't debit or transact until you fix it. Linking both numbers and matching your details lifts it.
How do I lift a PND restriction on my account?
Obtain both your BVN and NIN, ensure the details match your account, and take them to your bank (app or branch) to update your KYC. Once verified and linked, the bank lifts the restriction. If a name/DOB mismatch is the cause, you may need a correction first.
What if my BVN and NIN details don't match?
You may need a correction so the two align before linking succeeds — mismatched names or dates of birth can cause the link to be rejected and the account restricted. Fix the mismatch through your bank (for BVN) or NIMC (for NIN), then link.
