Belmadeng is an independent study platform and is not affiliated with NIBSS, the CBN or any bank. This is an informational guide — check, enrol or update your BVN only through official channels (your bank, the official NIBSS BVN validation portal, or the BVN helpdesk). Never share your BVN, OTP, PIN or card details with anyone, and never pay “agents” promising shortcuts.

What verification means

BVN verification/validation is the check a bank or fintech runs to confirm a BVN is genuine and belongs to you — usually by matching your BVN with your name, date of birth and biometrics held by NIBSS.

How banks & fintechs verify

Licensed institutions use the official NIBSS BVN validation service/portal (or an approved API) to validate customers during account opening and KYC. This confirms your identity without exposing your full record.

Confirming your own BVN

You can confirm your own BVN and that it’s active via *565*0#, your bank app, or your branch. The NIBSS portal also allows a paid self-check using your registered phone details.

Why you can’t look up others’

For privacy and security, individuals cannot simply type a name to fetch someone’s BVN. The validation portal is mainly for licensed businesses, and self-retrieval requires your own registered details.

Stay safe

Only legitimate, licensed institutions should validate your BVN, and only with your knowledge. Never share your BVN, OTP or PIN with anyone claiming to “verify” you by phone or SMS.

What BVN verification is

BVN verification is the process by which a bank or authorised financial institution confirms your identity against the central BVN database. When you open an account, apply for a loan, or complete certain financial transactions, the institution validates your BVN to be sure the person is genuinely you. This is the whole point of the system — it lets the financial sector trust that an identity is real, which protects your accounts from impersonation and helps keep fraud out of the banking system.

Verifying your own BVN

For your own purposes, you can confirm your BVN and its details through the same official channels you'd use to check it: the *565*0# code, your bank's app, or a branch. This lets you verify your BVN is valid and that the name and date of birth on it are correct — useful before linking it to a NIN or opening a new account. If you find an error, arrange a correction through your bank. Formal verification of you, however, is something institutions do through their authorised access, not something you perform on others.

Verification and privacy

Verification is designed to happen through authorised, secure channels — you generally don't need to hand your raw BVN to third parties for them to “verify” you, because legitimate institutions validate it through the proper system. Be cautious of any website, app or person outside your bank asking you to enter your BVN together with sensitive details to “verify” something. Share your BVN only with your bank and legitimate, regulated institutions, through channels you trust — and never alongside your OTP or PIN. Protecting your BVN is part of protecting your accounts.
