International Driving Permit (IDP): Driving Abroad

What the IDP is, how to get one to drive abroad, and how it works with your Nigerian licence.

This is an informational guide — apply and renew your driver’s licence only on the official portal (nigeriadriverslicence.frsc.gov.ng) and pay through official channels (Remita or participating banks). Beware touts and clone sites, and never try to “buy” a licence without the required driving-school, test and biometric steps.

What the IDP is

The International Driving Permit (IDP) is a document that translates your national driver’s licence into a widely recognised format, allowing you to drive in many other countries alongside your Nigerian licence.

Who needs one

Nigerians who plan to drive abroad (for travel, study or short stays) often need an IDP, since a Nigerian-only licence may not be accepted on its own everywhere.

How to get one

The IDP is issued through the authorised body — in Nigeria this is handled via the Automobile Association of Nigeria (AA) in conjunction with the FRSC framework. You’ll need a valid Nigerian driver’s licence, a passport photo and your details.

Validity

An IDP is typically valid for a limited period (often about a year) and only while your underlying Nigerian licence is valid.

It doesn’t replace a local licence

An IDP is a companion to your Nigerian licence, not a replacement. For a longer stay abroad, a country may require you to obtain its own local licence — check that country’s rules.

Tips

  • Get a valid Nigerian licence first.
  • Apply for the IDP before you travel.
  • Check the destination country’s driving rules.

What an international permit is

An International Driving Permit (IDP) lets a Nigerian licence-holder drive in many foreign countries by translating and accompanying your national licence into an internationally-recognised format. It doesn't replace your Nigerian licence — it works alongside it, so you carry both abroad. The IDP is useful when you plan to drive or hire a car overseas, since many countries want to see an internationally-recognised permit in addition to (or instead of) a foreign national licence they can't easily read.

How to get one

In Nigeria the IDP is issued through the recognised channel — the Automobile Association of Nigeria (AA) in conjunction with the FRSC framework. The core requirement is that you already hold a valid Nigerian driver's licence, since the IDP is built on top of it. You apply through the authorised issuer, provide your licence and the required details/photos, and pay the fee. Because it's tied to your national licence, sort your Nigerian licence first if you don't yet have a valid one.

Validity and what it isn't

An IDP is generally valid for a limited period (commonly about a year), so obtain it close to your travel rather than far in advance. Two cautions: an IDP is not a substitute for a Nigerian licence (it's only valid alongside a genuine national licence), and each destination sets its own rules on whether and how an IDP is accepted — so check the requirements of the country you're visiting. Use only the authorised issuer; avoid “instant IDP” sellers online, which may issue documents that aren't recognised.
