The grades (A1–F9)

GradeScoreCounts as
A175–100Credit
B2–B365–74Credit
C4–C650–64Credit (C6 = minimum)
D7–E840–49Pass (not credit)
F90–39Fail

What counts as a credit

A credit is C6 and above (50% and above). This is the level institutions require.

Credit vs pass vs fail

D7 and E8 are passes but not credits, and are not accepted for admission. F9 is a fail.

Credits for admission

Most institutions require at least five credits (C6+), including English and Mathematics and, for NABTEB, a relevant technical/trade subject. Check your course in our course profiles and subject-combination checker.

Same scale as WAEC/NECO

NABTEB uses the identical A1–F9 nine-point scale as WAEC and NECO, and is accepted on the same basis, so you can usually combine a NABTEB sitting with a WAEC or NECO sitting.

Tips

  • Aim for credits, not passes, in every course-critical subject.
  • Remember your practicals feed into your grade.

The A1–F9 scale

NABTEB grades each subject on the nine-point A1–F9 scale, the same structure used by WAEC and NECO:

Because this matches the other O'Level bodies, a NABTEB grade reads the same way to institutions as a WAEC or NECO grade at the same level.

What counts as a credit

The key line is the credit: C6 or better (A1 through C6). D7 and E8 are passes but not credits, and most admissions won't accept them where a credit is required. Since the standard benchmark is five credits including English and Mathematics, aim firmly for C6 and above in your key subjects — including your trade subjects where they count toward your course. For technical/practical subjects, remember the practical component feeds into your grade, so it directly affects whether you hit a credit.

Acceptance for admission

NABTEB's NBC/NTC is accepted for admission by JAMB and by polytechnics, monotechnics, colleges and universities that recognise the certificate — and its A1–F9 grades are read on the same terms as WAEC/NECO. This means you can combine NABTEB with WAEC or NECO results across sittings (where the institution allows) to meet the five-credit rule. Because acceptance for a specific course can vary, always confirm your target institution takes NBC/NTC for your programme before relying on it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the NABTEB grading system?
The same nine-point A1–F9 scale as WAEC and NECO: A1–C6 are credits, D7 and E8 are passes (not credits), and F9 is a fail.
What counts as a credit in NABTEB?
A credit is C6 and above (50% and above).
Is D7 a pass or a fail in NABTEB?
D7 is a pass but not a credit, and it is not accepted for university admission.
Is NABTEB the same as WAEC grading?
Yes — NABTEB uses the identical A1–F9 scale and is accepted on the same basis for admission.
How many credits do I need for admission with NABTEB?
At least five credits (C6+), usually including English and Mathematics and a relevant technical/trade subject.
What is the NABTEB grading system?
The nine-point A1–F9 scale, the same as WAEC and NECO: A1 excellent; B2/B3 very good/good; C4–C6 credit passes; D7/E8 ordinary passes; F9 fail. A NABTEB grade reads the same way to institutions as a WAEC or NECO grade at the same level.
What is a credit in NABTEB?
A credit is C6 or better (A1 through C6). D7 and E8 are passes but not credits, and most admissions won't accept them where a credit is required. Aim for C6 and above in your key subjects.
Is NABTEB grading the same as WAEC and NECO?
Yes — NABTEB uses the same A1–F9 structure, so a credit means the same across all three and institutions read them on the same terms. This is why you can combine NABTEB with WAEC or NECO results to meet admission requirements.
Is NABTEB accepted for university admission?
Yes — NABTEB's NBC/NTC is accepted by JAMB and by polytechnics, monotechnics, colleges and universities that recognise the certificate, with grades read on the same terms as WAEC/NECO. Confirm your target institution accepts NBC/NTC for your specific course.
Do NABTEB practicals affect my grade?
Yes — for technical/trade subjects the practical component feeds into your subject grade, so strong practical performance directly affects whether you reach a credit. Prepare for both theory and practicals.
