Belmadeng is an independent study platform and is not affiliated with NELFUND or the Federal Government. This is general information, not financial advice — apply only through the official portal (nelf.gov.ng / portal.nelf.gov.ng). Applying is free — no one legitimate charges a fee, and no agent can “guarantee” your loan. Amounts, terms and eligibility change — confirm the current details on the official portal.

Two components

NELFUND covers two categories of student expenses: your institutional charges (tuition) and an optional monthly upkeep allowance.

Tuition (institutional charges)

The tuition portion is paid directly to your institution's account — you won't see this money in your personal account, because it settles your school charges on your behalf.

Upkeep allowance

The upkeep allowance is a monthly stipend paid to your own bank account for living expenses (feeding, accommodation, transport). It is currently ₦20,000/month. (A widely shared rumour of ₦150,000 was officially debunked — rely only on official updates.)

What it doesn't do

It's a loan, not a grant — it must be repaid (interest-free). It also doesn't turn into cash for tuition in your hand — tuition goes to the school.

Is it taxable?

The loan is not income and not taxable — it's deferred payment for educational services.

Tips

  • Expect tuition to go to the school, not to you.
  • Upkeep is ~₦20,000/month — ignore inflated rumours.
  • Remember it's a loan to repay.

Two parts: tuition and upkeep

A NELFUND loan has two distinct components, and you can take one or both:

At application you choose institutional charges only or charges plus upkeep. The two serve different needs — one clears your fees, the other helps with day-to-day costs — so most students take both.

How much tuition is covered

The institutional component is designed to cover 100% of your tuition and mandatory fees as confirmed by your school's fee schedule — which is why your institution must be onboarded so NELFUND knows the exact amount. If your school charges something above what NELFUND's schedule covers (a genuine shortfall), the difference is settled through your institution's own payment portal. The loan amount therefore varies per student, based on their actual fees.

What it does not cover

It helps to be clear about the edges. The upkeep is a modest living stipend, not a lifestyle fund — you manage your own expenses, including accommodation, from it. The loan is meant for education, not luxuries. Two reassurances on the money side: the loan is interest-free, and it is not treated as taxable income — it's a deferred payment for educational services, not earnings. See upkeep and repayment for detail.
