Who registers
The BECE is for students in their final year of junior secondary school, JSS3. Registration is handled by your school — individual students do not register themselves.
How registration works
- Your school registers its JSS3 candidates on the relevant portal (NECO’s portal for the federal BECE; the state board’s system for the state BECE).
- Each candidate’s bio-data, photograph and subjects are entered.
- The school pays and submits, and candidates receive their exam/registration details.

Deadlines
Registration windows are announced each year and close well before the exam (for the 2026 NECO BECE, registration closed in early April, with the exam in late April). Schools should register early — once the window closes, options are very limited.

Registration is through the school
A defining feature of the BECE: registration is done through the school, not by individuals. There's no private/individual candidate registration for the BECE the way there is for the SSCE GCE — the student must be a bona fide JSS3 student at a Federal, State or approved private school, with complete Continuous Assessment (CA) records and the full three-year JSS curriculum behind them. Parents and students therefore work through the school, which handles registration on the correct BECE platform (NECO or State).

Since the school registers the student, families mainly need to provide accurate details and meet the school's requirements: the student's correct biodata, a passport photograph where required, and payment of the registration fee as advised by the school. Ensure the student's name and details are spelt correctly and consistent with school records, since these carry through to the result and certificate. Deadlines and the two systems
Because NECO BECE and State BECE run on separate systems, deadlines and fees differ and are set by the relevant body/state — and there may be a late-registration fee for missing the window. The school will know the correct dates for its BECE, so follow the school's timeline closely and don't leave payment or details to the last minute. If your child's school is unclear on which body it uses, ask directly — registering on the wrong system causes avoidable problems later.
