Belmadeng is an independent study platform and is not affiliated with NECO, WAEC or any State Ministry of Education. The BECE (Junior WAEC) is conducted by NECO (federal) and by State Ministries of Education. Register and check results only on the official channels (NECO: neco.gov.ng and results.neco.gov.ng; your state board or your school), and never enter details on look-alike sites.

Two BECEs, one purpose

There is one BECE purpose — certifying JSS3 and placing you in SS1 — but it is run by two kinds of body, with separate registration, timetables and result systems.

The NECO (federal) BECE

The NECO BECE is conducted by the National Examinations Council for students in Federal Unity Colleges, Federal Science & Technical Colleges, Armed Forces secondary schools and approved private schools. Results are checked online at results.neco.gov.ng with a token.

The state BECE

The state BECE is run by each State Ministry of Education (state examination board) for state-owned public schools and approved private schools in that state. Each state has its own timetable, registration and result process.

Which one do you take?

It depends on your school: federal and approved-private-school students usually take the NECO BECE; state public-school students take their state BECE. Your school will tell you which applies — you do not choose.

How results differ

  • NECO BECE: check online at results.neco.gov.ng with a token.
  • State BECE: some states have an online portal (you need a PIN); others send results to school principals, so you check through your school.

Tips

  • Ask your school which BECE you are sitting.
  • Follow that body’s timetable and result process — don’t mix them up.

Who sits which BECE

The rule of thumb is simple: your school determines your BECE. If a student attends a Federal Unity College, an Armed Forces secondary school, or a NECO-registered private school, they typically sit the NECO BECE. If they attend a state-owned public school (or a state-approved private school), they typically sit the State BECE run by that state's Ministry of Education. Parents unsure which applies should simply ask the school, since the school registers the student for the correct one.

How the two differ

The two are managed by separate bodies with separate systems. They can have different timetables, registration portals and result-checking platforms, and even differences in grading presentation from one state board to another. What they share is the purpose: both certify JSS3 completion and qualify a student for SS1. So neither is “better” — they're parallel systems for different school types, leading to the same milestone.

Checking the right result

Because the systems are separate, you must check results on the correct platform. NECO BECE results are checked on NECO's official portal (with a token); State BECE results are checked on that state's own BECE portal (each state has its own website and process). Using the wrong platform is a common reason a result “won't show.” If you're unsure which body your child sat, confirm with the school first, then use the matching official portal — see result checker.
