The BECE (Junior WAEC) is conducted by NECO (federal) and by State Ministries of Education. What the BECE is
The BECE (Basic Education Certificate Examination) is the exam students write at the end of Junior Secondary School 3 (JSS3). It marks the end of junior secondary education and is used to place students into Senior Secondary School (SS1).
Junior WAEC & JSCE
Most people call it “Junior WAEC”, and some states call it the JSCE (Junior School Certificate Examination). These all refer to the same JSS3 exit exam — though, despite the nickname, WAEC does not conduct it.
Who conducts it
The BECE is run at two levels:
- NECO BECE (federal) — for Federal Unity Colleges, Federal Science & Technical Colleges, Armed Forces secondary schools and approved private schools.
- State BECE — run by each State Ministry of Education for state-owned public schools (and approved private schools).
See the differences in NECO BECE vs state BECE.
Why it matters
The BECE is a compulsory terminal exam — the gateway from junior to senior secondary. You need to pass it (typically six subjects, including English and Mathematics) to progress to SS1.
What comes after
With a pass, you receive the Basic Education Certificate and move on to SS1, where you’ll later prepare for the senior exams — the WAEC/NECO SSCE.
The JSS3 exit exam
The Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) — commonly called “Junior WAEC” (or JSSCE) — is the exit examination for Junior Secondary School 3 (JSS3). It certifies completion of Nigeria's nine-year Basic Education (UBE) programme and is the gateway into Senior Secondary School 1 (SS1). It's sat by students finishing junior secondary, and it's distinct from the SSCE (WAEC/NECO), which comes later in SS3 and is used for university admission.
Who conducts the BECE
An important point that confuses many families: the BECE is conducted by more than one body. The NECO BECE serves Federal Unity Colleges, Armed Forces secondary schools and NECO-registered private schools. The State BECE is run by individual State Ministries of Education (in some framings with WAEC) for state public schools and state-approved private schools. So which BECE a student sits depends on their school — see NECO vs State BECE for the details.
What the BECE leads to
The BECE does two things. First, it's the required certification to move from JSS3 into SS1 — a student needs it to progress. Second, performance in the exam is often used for streaming into Science, Commercial or Arts in senior secondary, so strong results can shape which track a student enters. After the BECE, the next major exam milestone is the SSCE (WAEC/NECO) in SS3. Keep the result slip/certificate safe for school placement and records.
