What orientation camp is
Orientation camp is a compulsory 21-day (three-week) programme that begins the service year. It runs simultaneously in all 36 states and the FCT and includes registration, drills, lectures, skill-acquisition (SAED), CDS group selection and the swearing-in ceremony. You must report to the exact camp shown on your call-up letter — not your home or state of origin.

What to pack for camp

- Keep your documents and cash secure at all times.
- Report on the date on your call-up letter — late arrival causes problems.
What happens at orientation camp
The service year opens with a three-week orientation camp at your deployment state's NYSC camp. It's an intense, structured programme: early-morning drills and physical activities (paramilitary-style), lectures and orientation, SAED (Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development) sessions, social and cultural activities, and on-site registration/documentation. You'll live in camp in the familiar white-and-khaki kit. By the end, you're documented, oriented, and issued your posting to your Place of Primary Assignment for the rest of the year.
What to pack
Pack practically for three weeks of communal, active living. Bring your call-up letter and required documents (plus photocopies), passport photographs, and valid ID; white round-neck T-shirts and white shorts for drills, plus white socks and trainers; modest everyday clothing; toiletries, a towel, and a padlock for your box; a reusable water bottle and plate/cutlery; essential medications and a small first-aid kit; and some cash (camp has a market/“mammy market”). Keep valuables minimal and secure. Confirm the current official packing list, since specifics can vary.
Making the most of camp
A few things make camp smoother and more rewarding: take the SAED skills seriously — it's a genuine chance to pick up an income skill; stay hydrated, rest when you can, and look after your health in the demanding routine; keep your documents safe and complete every registration step (it affects your clearance and allowance); and engage — the friendships and networks formed in camp often last well beyond the service year. Approach it with a positive, flexible attitude and it becomes a highlight rather than a hurdle.
