The NYSC certificates
There are three end-of-process credentials: the Certificate of National Service (discharge certificate) for those who complete service, the exemption certificate for those legally exempt, and the exclusion letter for part-time graduates. Employers accept any of the three as proof that you have satisfied the NYSC requirement.
The discharge certificate
The discharge certificate is issued at the passing-out parade (POP) after you complete the full service year with satisfactory monthly clearances. It is one of the most important documents for employment in Nigeria.
How verification works
Employers and institutions can verify NYSC certificates through NYSC’s official verification process (including the NYSC verification portal), which confirms the certificate’s authenticity against NYSC records. Presenting a fake certificate is a serious offence. Always keep your details consistent so verification is smooth.
If your certificate is lost
- Report the loss and obtain a police report and, where required, a sworn affidavit.
- Apply for a reissue/replacement through NYSC’s official channels, following their current procedure and fees.
- Keep digital copies of all your NYSC documents to make replacement easier.
