BECE Grading System: A, B, C, P, F Explained

What each BECE grade means, the score bands, and how many subjects you need to pass overall.

The grades

The BECE uses letter grades. For the NECO BECE they run:

Grade	Score	Meaning
A	80–100	Distinction
B	60–79	Very good / good
C	50–59	Credit
P	40–49	Pass
F	0–39	Fail

What counts as a pass

Any grade from A to P (40% and above) is a pass in that subject; F is a fail. A, B and C are the stronger grades.

Passing overall

To be considered to have passed the BECE overall, a candidate generally needs to pass six subjects, including English and Mathematics. A weakness in Maths or English may mean a re-sit.

Not the same as SSCE

Note the BECE scale (A, B, C, P, F) is different from the senior SSCE scale (A1–F9) used by WAEC and NECO at senior level.

Aim for A–C, especially in English and Maths.
