The grades
The BECE uses letter grades. For the NECO BECE they run:

What counts as a pass
Any grade from A to P (40% and above) is a pass in that subject; F is a fail. A, B and C are the stronger grades.
Passing overall
To be considered to have passed the BECE overall, a candidate generally needs to pass six subjects, including English and Mathematics. A weakness in Maths or English may mean a re-sit.
Not the same as SSCE
Note the BECE scale (A, B, C, P, F) is different from the senior SSCE scale (A1–F9) used by WAEC and NECO at senior level.

The BECE grading scale

What counts as a pass for SS1
For promotion into SS1, the general benchmark is passes in a set number of subjects — commonly at least six, including English and Mathematics. Because A/B/C/P all count as passes on the five-level scale, the practical goal is to avoid Fs in your key subjects and secure passes across enough subjects. Individual schools may apply their own promotion and streaming rules on top of this, so confirm your school's specific criteria for SS1 placement and for entering the Science/Commercial/Arts tracks.
Why it differs from the SSCE
A common source of confusion: the BECE and the SSCE use different grading scales. The BECE typically uses the five-level A/B/C/P/F scale, while the SSCE (WAEC/NECO) uses the nine-point A1–F9 scale used for university admission. They're different exams for different stages — junior secondary exit versus senior secondary certification — so don't read a BECE grade as if it were an SSCE grade. Judge each against its own scale.
