What the certificate is

The Basic Education Certificate is awarded when you pass the BECE. It certifies that you have completed basic (junior secondary) education and are ready for senior secondary school.

How you get it

Once results are released and you have passed (usually six subjects, including English and Maths), the certificate is processed by the examining body (NECO or your state). Your school typically keeps and issues these records — ask your school about collection.

Placement into SS1

Your BECE result is used to place you into Senior Secondary School 1 (SS1). A pass moves you up; a deficiency in Maths or English may require a re-sit before full certification.

Choosing a stream

Going into SS1, students usually choose a stream — Science, Arts (Humanities) or Commercial. Your BECE performance (and interests) guide this choice, which shapes the subjects you’ll take toward WAEC/NECO. Our course profiles can help you think ahead about which subjects your future course needs.

It’s not a university certificate

The BECE is a junior certificate — it is not the O’Level used for university admission. For that, you’ll later sit the senior WAEC or NECO SSCE in SS3.
