Please note & stay safe
Belmadeng is an independent study platform and is not affiliated with the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS). This is an informational guide — apply, renew and pay for your passport only on the official NIS portal (passport.immigration.gov.ng) or the official NIS Mobile app, and pay online only. Beware clone websites and touts, and never pay “agents” promising same-day passports or shortcuts.
When to renew
Renew when your passport has expired or is close to expiry — many countries require at least six months’ validity, so renew in good time before travel.
How to renew (step by step)
- Go to passport.immigration.gov.ng (or the NIS app) and select Apply for Renewal/Re-issue.
- Sign in and verify your NIN; your bio-data is pulled from NIMC.
- Enter your current passport details and choose your booklet size and processing centre.
- Pay online and book your appointment.
- Attend biometric capture, then track and collect.
Renewal fees
Renewal costs the same as a new passport: ₦100,000 (32-page) or ₦200,000 (64-page) within Nigeria; $150/$230 abroad.
How long it takes
A renewal is usually faster than a fresh application — around three weeks from biometric capture (fresh applications ~6 weeks). See processing time.
Correction of data
If you need to correct a name, date of birth or other detail, use the separate Correction of Data option on the portal (fix your NIN first so they match).
Do it yourself, safely
The process is self-service — doing it yourself on the official portal is cheaper, faster and safer than using a tout. Pay online only, and beware clone websites.
When to renew
Renew before your passport actually causes a problem. Many countries require at least six months' validity remaining to let you travel, so don't wait for the expiry date — aim to renew several months ahead, especially if you have trips planned. You should also renew (or re-issue) if your booklet is full of visa pages, or replace it if it's damaged. Planning ahead matters because renewal still takes processing time, so leaving it late risks a clash with travel.
Renewal starts the same way as a fresh application — on the NIS portal/app, choosing Renewal/Re-issue, entering your details (verified against your NIN/NIMC record and existing passport), selecting your booklet and paying. The improvement for renewals: eligible applicants can complete biometrics contactlessly through the NIS Mobile app, avoiding an office visit entirely, and diaspora renewals in several countries can even be delivered to your home. Where contactless isn't available for your case, you attend your chosen office for biometric capture as usual.
Fees and corrections
Two practical notes. First, renewal costs the same as a fresh passport — there's no discount; the fee is set by the booklet and validity you choose (see fees). Second, if your details have changed or were wrong, don't quietly “fix” them in a renewal — use the Correction of Data option and ensure the change is reflected in your NIMC record too, so everything matches. As always, use the official portal, keep your payment receipt, and beware clone sites and “fast-track” offers.

Does passport renewal cost less than a new one?
No — renewal costs the same as a fresh passport; the fee depends on the booklet and validity you choose (32-page/5-year vs 64-page/10-year), not on whether it's a renewal. Confirm the current fee on the official NIS portal.
How do I correct wrong details when renewing?
Use the Correction of Data option rather than quietly changing details in a renewal, and make sure the correction is reflected in your NIMC record too so everything matches. Mismatches between your passport, application and NIN cause stalled applications.
