Why students need a BVN
A BVN lets you open and fully use a bank account — essential for receiving scholarships, bursaries, allowances and family transfers, and for paying fees and exam charges.
How to get one
Enrol free at any bank branch with a valid ID — see BVN registration. You’ll also need your NIN, and both must be linked to your account.
Opening a student account
Many banks offer student accounts with low requirements. Bring your BVN, NIN and ID. If you’re under 18, banks offer teen/children’s accounts opened with a parent or guardian — requirements vary, so confirm with the bank.
Scholarships & payments
Scholarship and bursary schemes usually pay into a bank account tied to your BVN. Make sure your name matches across your BVN, NIN, school records and application, so payments aren’t delayed or rejected.
BVN and your NIN
Your BVN is for banking and your NIN is your national ID (and what exam bodies like JAMB/WAEC/NECO require). You’ll use both — see BVN vs NIN.
Tips
- Get your BVN and NIN early, before you need to receive money.
- Keep your details consistent everywhere.
- Never share your BVN, OTP or PIN — see BVN scams.
